Josh NasonAug 8, 2009
It's UFC 101 weekend and we're here to provide you some quick-hit bullet points for you to keep in mind as you're watching the action either on PPV tonight or live in Philly, PA.
We have five bullet points for the two co-main events and a few highlights for the other three televised bouts.
UFC Lightweight Championship: BJ Penn (c) vs. Kenny Florian
- The 30-year-old Penn has been fighting professionally since 2001 and has a 13-5-1 record, while the 33-year-old Florian sports an 11-3 record in just over six years of professional MMA.
- KFlo enters Saturday on a six-fight win streak, four by submission.
- Penn has won three of his last four, but is coming off a 4th round TKO loss to Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre at January's UFC 94.
- Penn has an even five wins by submission and five by knockout, while seven of Florian's 11 wins are by submission with three T/KOs.
- Penn, also a former Welterweight Champion, has successfully defended the Lightweight gold once since winning the title with a bloody submission win over Joe Stevenson at UFC 80.
- Saturday's fight will be the first for Griffin since losing the Light Heavyweight title to Rashad Evans at last December's UFC 92.
- Silva comes into UFC 101 with the chance to break the all-time record for consecutive wins with 10.
- Silva is the UFC's current Middleweight Champion and his five defenses of the gold are tied for the record.
- Two of Griffin's last three losses have come by TKO, while seven of Silva's last 10 wins have come by T/KO.
- This will be Silva's second foray into the UFC's 205-pound division after a dominant 1st-round KO win over James Irvin last July.
Amir Sadollah vs. Johny Hendricks
- Because of repeated injuries, this will be Sadollah's first fight since winning the TUF 7 finale last June.
- The 5-0 Hendricks makes his Octagon debut tonight after two WEC victories, three of which have come by knockout.
Kendall Grove vs. Ricardo Almeida
- After two straight KO losses that had some thinking Grove's days in the UFC were over, the TUF 3 winner has two straight wins heading into Saturday - the last via 1st-round KO.
- The 10-4 Almeida has been with the UFC since February 2008 with a 2-1 Octagon mark. Five of the 32-year-old's 10 wins have come by decision.
Josh Neer vs. Kurt Pellegrino
- Neer is a veteran, compiling 25-7-1 record since March 2003. He's got a 2-1 record in his second go-round in the UFC and is coming off a 2nd-round submission victory over Mac Danzig in February.
- The 13-4 Pellegrino is riding a two-fight win streak into Saturday and will be looking to submit Neer as nine of his victories have come via tapout.
