Key Matchup: Andrew Luck vs. Peyton Manning
There is no doubting the ability of both the Denver and Indianapolis defensive units, but the real storyline in this matchup is the quarterback war between Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning.
Manning was the No. 1 overall pick for the Colts in 1998 and played 13 seasons with Indianapolis, bringing the city a Super Bowl championship. After Manning underwent neck surgery and missed the 2011 season, the Colts moved on and drafted Luck No. 1 overall in 2012.
The two former Indianapolis No. 1 overall picks now square off with the right to advance to the AFC Championship Game. The Colts are coming off a dominant victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in the Wild Card Round, but the Broncos were off in the first round with a bye and will now host Indianapolis in the divisional round.
While the two men are going to battle on Sunday, Manning took the time to tell Nicki Jhabvala of The Denver Post about how highly he thinks of Luck:
"I guess if you're the first pick in the draft you're always going to be compared to other first picks, and if you play for a team, there's going to be comparisons to other quarterbacks who have played. Obviously, it's an outstanding start to his career. It's not a surprise at all to me. A guy who has as much talent as he has, you combine that with the type of work ethic that you hear that he has, and the times that I've been around him you just kind of knew he was going to do everything that he could to be a special player.
"
Manning should understand the greatness of Luck, especially as Mike Sando of ESPN.com pointed out the superior numbers for the current Colts quarterback:
Both men had stellar seasons for their respective teams. On Manning’s side, he racked up 4,727 yards, 39 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 16 games, while Luck has amassed an equally impressive 4,761 yards, 40 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 16 games.
As seen from the stats this season, these two men are as evenly matched as football fans could have dreamed. While they likely won’t address it publicly, Luck and Manning should both be looking to outperform the other.
The result on Sunday should be a fierce war that has both offensive units playing at an elite level, but the experience edge goes to Manning. Luck has incredible tenacity, but Manning’s Broncos are looking to reach the Super Bowl once again and Indianapolis won’t be able to stop them.
Predicted Final Score: Denver 33, Indianapolis 30
