Chelsea Transfer News: Sergio Ramos Comment Fuels Real Madrid Exit Rumours
Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has sparked rumours of an unlikely transfer after dismissing the attraction of Spanish football, saying: "I prefer the English Premier League."
Ramos' comments came after he fouled Atletico Madrid's Raul Garcia in the penalty area during Los Blancos' 2-0 Copa del Rey defeat to their city rivals. Garcia slammed the resulting spot-kick home to give his side the lead, before Jose Gimenez doubled the Rojiblancos' first-leg advantage.
Ben Jefferson of the Express reported Jose Mourinho's interest in Ramos during December. Jefferson suggested the Portuguese "made contact" to "let the defender know he has a place at Chelsea if contract negotiations do not go well at Real Madrid."

Manchester United were reported to be lining up a £105,000-per-week contract to convince him to head to Old Trafford, with Arsenal also potentially interested, per James Dickenson of the same publication.
Ramos is yet to sign a new deal at the Bernabeu, and his reaction to giving away the aforementioned penalty will give the Blues slight hope they could lure him abroad. AS reported the centre-back's annoyance with Spanish officiating:
"I’m not going to talk about controversial issues and certainly not that incident. The only thing I will say is that with every passing day I prefer the English Premier League. What am I talking about? Obviously not about the ball boys...the style of play, refereeing. People enjoy watching that competition. When one loses it’s easy to focus on the refereeing decisions.
"
Football writer Joe Krishnan provided his take on the incident when Ramos and Garcia came together:
Chelsea supporters would undoubtedly welcome a defender of his calibre to the club. While John Terry continues to work hard at both ends of the pitch, Gary Cahill's performances have dipped since the early part of the season.

Similar to the way Gerard Pique has become exposed at Barcelona, Cahill seems to have lost his ability to confidently read the game. He was unable to deal with Newcastle United's direct counter-attack during Chelsea's first loss of the season in December, while Harry Kane consistently pulled him out of position when Tottenham Hotspur slotted five beyond their London rivals on New Year's Day.
Mistakes are perhaps amplified by Cahill's lack of pace on the turn. Mourinho may be tempted to look for a more athletic type to sit alongside Terry.
Ramos is arguably the world's best all-round centre-back—he is strong in the tackle, excellent with the ball at his feet and an attacking threat from set pieces—so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Blues boss aim to sign his old colleague.

Let's not forget that Mourinho outlined Raphael Varane as "the best young defender in the world" back in March of last year, per Elliott Bretland of the Daily Mail.
David Wright of the Express now believes that Varane wishes to make a Premier League switch, a situation in which Mourinho's previous comments could have a massive impact. It wouldn't be unlike the former Los Blancos boss to subtly sow the seeds with compliments before eventually making a move.
Chelsea continue to be linked with a number of unlikely transfers, however, as noted by Garry Hayes' breakdown of possible deals for B/R UK:
Ramos is the kind of player who puts everything on the line for Madrid. His comments suggest the Spanish game needs to adopt or at least allow a greater physical approach. The 28-year-old would fit naturally into the English setup and has the quality to improve Chelsea's chances of success, despite his likely new Bernabeu deal.
Mourinho previously admitted that there will be "nobody to leave and nobody to come in" during the winter transfer window, per The Sports Bar on talkSPORT. Even so, it wouldn't be beyond the manager to try and pull off a remarkable bid for Ramos, particularly considering his relationship with the World Cup winner.
