Panthers vs. Seahawks: Early Odds, Over-Under and Spread Predictions
With the 2015 NFL playoffs in full swing following a thrilling Wild Card Round, the Seattle Seahawks finally start their quest for a Super Bowl repeat Saturday with a visit from the Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers are not your average 8-8-1 team, having won five in a row, including a Wild Card Weekend beating of the Arizona Cardinals. A once-porous defense has turned things around in a big way, and quarterback Cam Newton is finally looking like himself again after an injury-riddled regular season.
Pete Carroll's crew wrapped up home-field advantage with the NFC's top seed and have one .500 team standing between them and a repeat trip to the conference title game. And while the Panthers are red-hot coming into town, Seattle—winners of six straight—is even hotter.

Panthers vs. Seahawks Preview

The Panthers and the Seahawks have been in postseason mode for quite some time, as told by their impressive winning streaks—but each in their own unique way.
Seattle did have its postseason fate uncertain throughout the middle stretch of the season, but it has only continued peaking as the playoff spot was clinched. With six straight wins all by double digits, the Seahawks have been taking it to the opposition.
But the Panthers? Well, it's practically been win-or-you're-done for months.
Carolina won four straight to close out the regular season, and it needed all four in order to remain alive for the NFC South. The Panthers kept it going heading into the postseason, throttling Arizona 27-16 at home to advance.
As Newton has gotten back to full strength, the Panthers offense has been on fire, and one of two trends will be bucked come Saturday, per ESPN Stats & Information:
But while the Panthers' last five wins have come against four non-playoff teams and a reeling Cardinals bunch, they face the most dominant team in the league over the last two months.
Newton blended the run and the pass to his team's advantage against Arizona's depleted defense, but that will be easier said than done against Seattle. The Seahawks boast the league's top passing defense and third-ranked run defense.

With that said, Newton's option with running back Jonathan Stewart behind a peaking offensive line should pose problems—even for a defense as stout as the Seahawks.
But when it comes down to it, Carolina hasn't faced an offense that can run the ball nearly as strong as Seattle's. Behind running back Marshawn Lynch's downhill attack and quarterback Russell Wilson's sporadic scrambles, the Seahawks rush for 172 yards per game—tops in the NFL.
The Panthers will hang around thanks to Newton's success on offense, but there won't be nearly enough scoring opportunities to hang with Seattle for four quarters. Two offenses that are peaking at the right time will push the over/under, but the Seahawks will cover the spread late.
Prediction: Seahawks 31, Panthers 17
