Cesaro and Tyson Kidd Will Prove Mick Foley Right with Breakout 2015

Ryan DilbertJan 5, 2015

Count Mick Foley among the folks who believe Cesaro and Tyson Kidd are destined for a prosperous 2015.

The Hall of Famer's instincts are spot on. Cesaro and Kidd's talent and the timing of their pairing promises the duo great success ahead.

After an up-and-down year, Cesaro got the "we don't know what to do with you" treatment. WWE stuck him in a tag team with Kidd, another talented grappler who was running in place.

Early on, the results have been impressive.

The new team's match on Friday's SmackDown inspired Foley to write on his Facebook, "I am going to boldly predict that Kidd and Cesaro will be the #WWE tag team of the year for 2015." Later in the post, he added, "Given the chance, and some time to gel, I see big things—and great matches—in this team's future."

Foley's thoughts hold extra weight. He has seen tag team success from up close, winning the WWE tag titles eight times in his career.

Cesaro and Kidd have a favorable path ahead of them to take home gold themselves. That path begins with WWE having a lack of options when it comes to tag teams.

A Tag Team Division Ready to Be Taken Over

With The Shield and The Wyatt Family splitting up and, to a lesser extent, The Real Americans and The Prime Time Players doing the same, the tag team division became rice paper-thin. New groups have popped up since, but the division is still hurting.

The Usos are the clear cornerstones.

Jimmy and Jey look to be getting help with The Ascension's arrival. There are major questions surrounding that duo, though.

WWE has cranked up the volume on their gimmick, making them less intimidating than they were on NXT. Red face paint and over-the-top ring gear are a part of a cornier version of The Ascension.

Beyond that, the division is brimming with comedy acts and filler.

Los Matadores have never felt like a top team. They provide some fun athleticism, a lot of gags involving El Torito and little else. The New Day's ultra-positive act hasn't caught on.

Goldust and Stardust's momentum has faded since they won the tag titles last September. They have come off as a goofy act, a duo with far less of a connection with the crowd than when Stardust wrestled as Cody Rhodes alongside his brother.

Damien Mizdow's antics are among the most entertaining moments on WWE TV each week, but his alliance with The Miz won't last. WWE has been teasing tension between those two for weeks.

The obvious story to run with there is to have Mizdow turn babyface at some point, pushing back against The Miz for treating him so poorly all this time.

Fans have seen splintering between Stardust and Goldust as well. In recent matches, Goldust has inadvertently caused his team to lose.

That smells like foreshadowing of a brother-versus-brother battle down the road.

That would leave WWE with just a handful of teams. In a packed division, Cesaro and Kidd might end up being the division's doormats. In a field with so few teams and with acts that just aren't clicking, the newly formed heel squad gets a free ride up the company's hierarchy.

The electricity that accompanies novelty aids them as well.

Fresh but Familiar Faces

Cesaro and Kidd offer an alternative to Los Matadores, whom fans have seen time and time again, to Stardust and Goldust, who have been a key part of the tag team division since the end of 2013.

Their story is an intriguing one. Both Cesaro and Kidd are constantly labeled as "underrated" and "underused." Forming a team creates new possibilities and a chance at redemption.

As fans have seen in the last few years, the hot new arrivals with engaging stories rise to the top of the tag team division.

In 2012, fans were pulled in by Daniel Bryan and Kane's odd-couple relationship. Bryan became an instant fan favorite among purists, a great technical wrestler with a growing fanbase. His tension with Kane and the odd juxtaposition of their pairing got them a spot on top of the division for months.

There are a lot of parallels between Bryan and Cesaro.

Both have been criticized for a lack of charisma. Both are tremendous in-ring workers. Bryan's fanbase started with the diehard segment of the WWE population, and Cesaro's supporters come from that group as well.

There's a good chance The King of Swing will attempt to use this tag team run to bolster his status as Bryan did.

The members of The Shield followed Team Hell No as champs, their buzz saw-like attacks and newness getting them noticed early on. The Rhodes brothers headed the division next, their story of fighting for their jobs making for must-see TV.

Although fans were certainly familiar with Rhodes and Goldust separately, it was refreshing to see them both in new roles as partners.

Cesaro and Kidd have a similar energy. Their tag team is a newly constructed road for two guys whose wheels were spinning.

And while a new group like The Ascension has to create a connection with fans, Kidd and Cesaro simply get to build on theirs. They are a known product in unfamiliar packaging, a smart way to kick-start their momentum.

WWE surely had the same thought process when putting Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E together as part of The New Day. The difference between that group and Cesaro and Kidd's pairing is the magic that the recently formed duo can create in the ring.

More Mat Than Mic

Tag teams don't talk as much as singles stars. While the men on the marquee are asked to tell their stories on the microphone, the tag team division is often just asked to lean on ring work.

That's in Cesaro and Kidd's favor. Each man's weakness is in the vocal part of the wrestling business. They are both serviceable mic workers but outstanding wrestlers.

The division will showcase them, merging Kidd's high-flying style with Cesaro's rough-and-tumble, throwback approach. The focus can be on their matches, which have been produced at a high quality throughout their careers.

When the WWE.com staff compiled a list of the top 25 matches of 2014, Cesaro's name was all over it. He worked six of those bouts, including four in the top 15. Kidd popped up three times, as he competed in the No. 11 and No. 4 matches in addition to the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

Big E's and Woods' names, on the other hand, didn't come up except for the WrestleMania Battle Royal.

Cesaro's resume says he's a main eventer. Until WWE realizes that, he will boost the tag team division alongside a top-notch in-ring performer in Kidd.

Fans already saw how fun this pairing can be when they rolled over Los Matadores on SmackDown. They hit creative double-team moves and displayed an impressive amount of chemistry for having just worked together for a few weeks.

Put them against The Usos and expect excellence. Have them battle The Ascension, and they will no doubt make an impression.

Foley sounded crazy when he called Damien Sandow's post-cash-in loss to John Cena "the dawning of age of Sandow." He's going to look prophetic when Cesaro and Kidd have a breakout year in a division in need of new blood.
