Dana White Vs. Strikeforce: A Fight Not Worth Fighting?
What did your mom used to tell you all the time growing up? "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all?"
I think we should have given mom a little credit for knowing more than she let on.
With UFC behind-the-scenes activity getting more publicity than its fights this week, President Dana White took a shot at the closest thing the company has to a rival. He called out Strikeforce as being a soon-to-be-bankrupt company run by overachievers.
He even went as far as to refer to the fellow MMA company as "Strikefarce." But what did the comments really achieve?
When Strikeforce signed Fedor Emelianenko before UFC could, many people thought it was a loss for the UFC, but certainly one it would rebound from. The UFC is hands down the most well-known MMA company in the country, if not the world; surely one fighter would not be their downfall.
But clearly, the move got to Dana White a little bit more than people thought. Recent interviews have recorded White making threatening remarks towards his supposed opposition, saying things along the lines of: "They should have stayed the way they were," implying that Strikeforce opened up a can of worms it's not ready for.
However, if White really wanted to prove UFC's dominance, he would have said nothing at all. If anything, his reaction has shown that the UFC might be more worried than the public originally thought. When the champ is the one that starts calling out the contenders, it doesn't show supreme confidence, it shows insecurity.
If you have the record and numbers to back up your position, you let them do the talking for you. The biggest talkers are never the ones who talk the loudest in the ring/octagon.
Instead of taking off the proverbial gloves, White should have just smiled and let Strikeforce have their fun, knowing that in the end, nothing they did would really impact the success of the UFC. But now they have hope, however small a sliver, and UFC looks less indestructible than it has in a while.
But then again, momma always did know best.
