Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Gareth Bale, Wesley Sneijder Rumours

James DudkoJan 2, 2015

Manchester United may be set to miss out on three prime transfer targets. Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale and centre-back Pepe seem content in the Spanish capital. Meanwhile, Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder is emerging as a target for Juventus.

There's an obvious connection with Sneijder and United boss Louis van Gaal. The pair worked together with the Netherlands national team.

However, it's Bale's name that leaps off the page. The Welsh wing wizard, though, has reiterated that he won't be making the jump to Old Trafford, indicating he's ready to win more in Madrid, per Spanish publication AS (h/t Goal.com writer Tom Webber):

"

It's an amazing attacking threat that we have, and it's one we want to keep improving.

I wanted to come to Real Madrid to win trophies and play with the best players, and that's what I've done in the first year.

Hopefully I can keep improving and win a lot more trophies in the future, doing the best I can.

"

The "amazing attacking threat" Bale referred to is the forward trio comprised of the ex-Tottenham Hotspur star, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. That three-pronged combination of lightning pace, dynamic athletic brawn and technical ingenuity gives Los Blancos arguably the best attack in Europe.

Van Gaal would obviously like to create the same dynamic at Old Trafford. That's clearly behind the interest in Bale.

Spanish publication Sport (h/t Daily Star reporter Jack Wilson) had indicated Madrid would take advantage of United's interest to help fund a move for Borussia Dortmund ace Marco Reus.

Yet it always seemed outlandish that Los Merengues would give up so soon on the player they paid a world-record fee for in 2013. Bale has since helped Madrid win the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Van Gaal looks like he'll miss out on Bale. He may also do the same with Sneijder. That's because Serie A giants Juventus appear to have expressed an interest.

Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri indicated as much when he dubbed Sneijder "a realistic luxury for us," during an interview with Italian outlet La Stampa (h/t GianlucaDiMarzio.com).

In truth, though, United needn't shed many, if any, tears over missing out on Sneijder. Any links, per the Exeter Express and Echo, to the player always seemed a little too convenient, based on little else than Van Gaal's history with Sneijder at international level.

But United have ample players in Sneijder's position. Specifically, attacking midfielders Angel Di Maria and Juan Mata can certainly both offer the same creativity and goal threat.

Sneijder will be 31 at the end of this season and he's recently been offered a new deal by current club Galatasaray, according to Daily Express reporter Jamie Anderson.

Yet B/R analyst Sam Tighe has indicated Sneijder is unhappy in Turkey and could be open to a winter move:

Despite this, Van Gaal may feel Sneijder has seen his best days and won't offer much long-term help to his Old Trafford rebuilding project. However, the Dutch coach may feel different about a young star such as Memphis Depay.

The 20-year-old PSV Eindhoven winger was one of the stars of Van Gaal's team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Back in November, Daily Express writer Anthony Chapman suggested United tried to sign the player last summer and had since been encouraged to make an £18 million offer during this window.

Recently, Depay told Voetbal International (h/t Metro reporter Will Giles) he could be playing elsewhere next season. However, United fans shouldn't start connecting the dots just yet.

BR/UK's Jonathan Johnson has indicated that a major new player has joined the race:

The last thing Van Gaal should do is get drawn into a bidding war with mega-rich Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain. After all, United's money should instead be dedicated to fixing the defence.

One player unlikely to be able to help with that is Los Blancos' rock-solid central defender Pepe. United and neighbours Manchester City remain keen on the burly Portuguese international, per Spanish publication Marca (h/t Mail Online Sport):

But Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti doesn't sound like a manager ready to dump his player, according to Marca reporters Jose Felix Diaz and Jose Luis Calderon: "Carlo Ancelotti views Pepe as a key member of the squad and continues to rate him a long way above young gun Raphael Varane, so is eager to make sure the Portugal international sticks around."

That's another blow for Van Gaal who needs to recruit at least one quality defender this January. The United boss recently bemoaned the way his defence was physically dominated during the 1-1 away draw against Stoke City.

Finding alternatives to a target like Pepe should be Van Gaal's focus this month. He should turn his back on luxury moves for forwards that would only further bloat his already congested attack.
