Can We Have the Canadian Grand Prix Back Please, Bernie?
Rumours are currently circulating that the Canadian Grand Prix will soon be returning to the Formula One calendar, which if it returns, will be held as it has been since the 1970's, in Montreal. If this rumour turns out to be true, then what a great piece of news this will be—not just for the tens of thousands of loyal and passionate Canadian fans, but for the whole of Formula One.
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is generally acknowledged to be a favourite of many Formula One fans around the world, and when you take a closer look at the circuit and at previous Canadian Grand Prix, it is easy to see why.
The circuit has a certain something special about it. Things happen there, races are often incident strewn, overtaking is common and races are hardly ever incident-free and processional. Add to that the challenge of the place. With its tight confines and ever-present walls, it catches out even the best of drivers, particularly at the infamous wall of champions.
It is a circuit that has seen more than it's fair share of incidents and epic races. Think back to the races in 1998, 1999, 2005, 2007, 2008 and you get the idea. Another question to ask is, has there ever been a dull and uneventful Canadian Grand Prix?
In these times of the calendar being cluttered up by bland Tilke-Dromes, which regularly produce insomnia curing races, a return to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with it's unique feel and challenge and often action packed races would be a breath of fresh air.
If Formula One is serious about improving the show and making races more exciting, then surely one objective should be to go to circuits like this that regularly throw up exciting races. It seems strange that with all this ambition and new regulations to try and improve the spectacle.
Personally I would be very happy if Formula One was to return to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and I think many other Formula One aficionados would be as well. Perhaps this rumour, if true, could mean that Bernie has finally started to listen to what the fans want, rather than who can wave the most cash at him. So come on Bernie, give us our Canadian Grand Prix back please.
