Tottenham Hotspur vs. Chelsea: Winners and Losers from London Derby
Tottenham Hotspur rang in the New Year with a bang on Thursday, beating London rivals Chelsea 5-3 at White Hart Lane.
Local boy Harry Kane scored twice for Spurs, and Danny Rose, Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli also found the back of the net for the hosts.
Chelsea, who opened the scoring through Diego Costa, twice cut their hosts' lead to two with tallies from Eden Hazard and John Terry, but in the end, Spurs were simply uncatchable.
Overall, there were several standout performances in north London, as well as one or two that were rather less impressive.
Following are the individual winners and losers from the encounter.
Winner: Nacer Chadli, Who Had One of His Best Games in a Tottenham Shirt
1 of 6
Nacer Chadli was simply exceptional on Thursday, and his goal in the 78th minute was richly deserved.
Harry Kane started the play from the left, but a fine finish was still required to find the back of the net, and the Belgian delivered it—beating Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois inside the far post.
Shortly after the restart, Chadli had played provider to Kane, whose second goal of the night gave Spurs a 4-1 lead.
According to Squawka, the 25-year-old also contributed three tackles and an interception while completing 82 percent of his passes at White Hart Lane.
Loser: Gary Cahill, Who Was Generally Abysmal
2 of 6
Gary Cahill was caught out of position on several Tottenham goals, and in first-half stoppage time, he committed the foul on Harry Kane that sent Andros Townsend to the penalty spot to score.
Nacer Chadli also tortured the Chelsea defender throughout the match, finding him easy to turn and a dream to run at from the left-hand side.
"Cahill once again proving to be a liability," tweeted The Independent's Joe Krishnan.
Winner: Eden Hazard, Who Provided Some Bright Moments for Chelsea
3 of 6
Chelsea may have embarrassingly conceded five goals on Thursday, but Eden Hazard provided several mesmerising moments for the Blues and was by far their best player against Spurs.
In the 18th minute, his slalom run into the 18-yard box culminated in a shot that hit the far post, but after Oscar put the rebound back at goal, Diego Costa was able to direct it into the back of the net for the opening tally of the match.
Spurs scored four goals after that, but shortly after the hour-mark, Hazard pickpocketed Federico Fazio and played a neat one-two with Cesc Fabregas before beating Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and cutting the hosts' lead to two.
Unfortunately for the Belgian maestro, his contributions weren't enough to lift Chelsea to victory on a difficult day all around.
Winner: Harry Kane, Whose Legend Continues to Grow
4 of 6
Harry Kane just can't stop scoring goals.
He bagged two more on Thursday, and his first in particular was something to behold.
After accepting the ball from Danny Rose, the 21-year-old shook off Oscar before striking a fierce drive that beat Thibaut Courtois to the 'keeper's right-hand side.
In the 78th minute, Kane also assisted on Nacer Chadli's goal.
"It shows how good we are and how we're coming together as a team," the forward remarked after the match, as per Spurs' official Twitter account. "It was a great win."
Loser: Nemanja Matic, Who Wasn't Able to Suffocate Spurs' Buildup Play
5 of 6
Nemanja Matic has been an integral part in Chelsea's success so far this season, but on Thursday, he put in what was easily his worst performance for the Blues.
Besides completing just 68 percent of his passes, according to Squawka, the midfielder found himself dragged throughout the centre of the park by Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen, who was exceptional in a central role for the hosts.
The Denmark international tested Matic's mobility, which was found to be lacking on this occasion.
Matic won only 50 percent of his tackles against Spurs, as per Squawka, and similarly prevailed in only half his aerial battles.
Winner: Manchester City, Who Are Joint Top of the League
6 of 6
Chelsea's 5-3 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur cost them sole possession of first place in the Premier League.
Manchester City, who won 3-2 at home to Sunderland earlier on Thursday, are now joint top of the English Premier League after 20 matches.
Next up for Chelsea are showdowns with Newcastle United and Swansea City, and they'll host City at Stamford Bridge on January 31.
