Manny Pacquiao Must Continue Pushing Floyd Mayweather for Superfight

Donald WoodDec 31, 2014

Boxing has been missing a blockbuster bout fans can get behind, but veteran Manny Pacquiao is doing everything in his power to push Floyd Mayweather into the superfight the sports world has been waiting to see for years.

Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) and Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs) are without question the two biggest stars in boxing over the last decade, but they have yet to step into the ring against each other.

Many believe that not squaring off will damage their place in the annals of the sport, and Pac-Man is making it clear he wants to add a fight with money to his resume.

Pacquiao took to Twitter on New Year’s Eve and was once again pushing Mayweather to get a fight done in 2015:

The most recent tweet comes just a few weeks after Pac-Man taunted his longtime foe before Christmas:

This wasn’t the first time Pacquiao spoke openly about getting a fight done with Mayweather, as he spoke to ABS-CBNnews.com last month:

"

I think it's time to say something. The people deserve that fight. The fans deserve that fight. I think it's time to say something.

It's been a long time that I wanted that fight, but I didn't just want to keep talking and talking about that fight (because) the other camp is just denying, denying, always denying to talk about that fight. It was better to say nothing.

"

There are fans that do not support this recent surge of what many perceive as barbs meant to persuade Mayweather to take a fight, but the undefeated champion spoke openly to Ben Thompson of FightHype.com about his willingness to accept a fight with the right conditions.

Among drug testing, the decision on the equipment to use and how the earnings will be divided, there are many aspects of the negotiation process that could be potential hurdles. If both men are truly open to the fight, though, getting it done should be a matter of when it will take place.

Unfortunately, the past history of negotiations between the two men and the issues that arose could cause more issues this time around as well. Boxing fans want to get excited for this fight, but with Pac-Man turning 36 earlier this month and Mayweather turning 38 on February 24, the intrigue is not what it was five years ago.

Boxing fans just want the fight. Until it is confirmed that the both men have put pen to paper, everyone will remain skeptical. In the meantime, Pacquiao must continue to push Mayweather to make this fight happen.
