Shoeless Joes Restaurant Scores Big In Charity Golf
During what was a rainy final weekend in July all golf fans were glued to their television sets watching several stellar individual performances during the much-anticipated RBC Canadian Open taking place at Glenn Abbey in Oakville, Ontario.
Approximately one week after 34 year-old Nathan Green shocked the golf world by winning the Open in a two- hole playoff against Retief Goosen, Glen Abbey held the Shoeless Joe’s 16th Annual Golf Classic which is in support of ‘Shoot For A Cure’. ‘Shoot For A Cure’, which teamed up with Shoeless Joe’s in 2000, is a hockey related charity that raises money for spinal cord research along with educating the public on these types of injuries along concussions.
On this same historic course that saw eight hole in ones during the Open, along with nine straight birdies from Mark Calcavecchia, the Shoeless Joes organizers added some extra incentive for the participating golfers. Various prizes were awarded for such things as closest to the pin, furthest drive and any hole in ones.
Besides trying their luck playing at this historic course, participants also had a chance to bid at a Live Auction on various items such as a Clublink Gold or Silver Package along with a Coin-Op Football table, Leaf tickets, Hockey Hall of Fame introduction tickets, Euro Cup tickets w/meet &greet and a Clublink foursome. Also set up in the main luxurious dining room was a fantastic silent auction that included Via I rail passes, a Dyson vacuum, a Euro Cup prize pack, Nautica Watch and loads of framed sports memorabilia.
Fortunately for the golfers rain didn’t play havoc to the coarse and back things up like it did with the Open, as play that weekend was stretched out for the first time since 1988 to a Monday. It ended up being a perfect day with only two holes of light rain. The weather actually cooperated as it only hit Toronto and not Oakville.
No matter what participants scored no one went home empty handed. For participating and donating money to Shoot For A Cure they all received a starting kit that includes such items as Croc flip flops, Corona keychain, Shoeless Joe’s jacket and a special NHL hockey poster, just to name just a few items.
Shoot For A Cure would like to thank Shoeless Joes, Joel Sisson, Andy Moore and the many charities including Pepsi, Molson, Moosehead, Kraft, Canada Bread, Corby, McCain, TechNic, KPMG, GPY Associates, PacTIV, Mister Produce, Pitney Bowes, Diageo and KPMG for lending their support at making this event a huge success.
