Who Should Switch Weight Classes in The UFC?

chris feaverAug 5, 2009

This is just a quick thought i had about a few fighters that may be in the wrong divisions.

In the last few years we have seen a few fighters moving up or down in weight classes and having more success. A few off the top of my head are Rashad Evans who has done alot better at LHW than he could have done at HW. Mike Bisping (even though Hendo just destroyed him) will no doubt have more success now that he is at middleweight, and most recently Diego Sanchez who is on a great path in the lightweight division. The list goes on but my focus here is to see what everyone thinks about the guys who need to follow in those footsteps.

A few i can think of that could benefit are:

Andrei Arlovski -- if he can make the cut to 205 i see his future looking up, Andrei is no doubt one of the quickest and most technical strikers in the HW division but after getting KO'ed so much in the last few years it seems the powerful HW strikers know they just need to eat a few and throw a big overhand in return, at 205 he could overpower alot of fighters and utilize his good ground game and his stand-up is still probably better than 85% of the LHW's

Tiago Alves -- although he would be short i think he could benefit by moving up to 185. He cuts alot of weight to make 170, up to 35 pounds and a couple times hasn't even made weight or really struggled and it shows in his cardio. He would be shorter in almost every fight but his striking and power would probably make up for it, and the fact that he would only have to cut half the weight would leave him stronger and lessen the chance of gassing.

Stephan Bonnar -- Lets face it, if it wasn't for the fact that Dana White loves this guy he would be out on his ass, he gets out striked, overpowered and beaten up in the LHW division. I'm not sure what he walks around at but if he could make 185 he would seem to stand a better chance in my eyes. Overall i don't feel he is a top fighter but he is a gatekeeper at best where he is now and hes barely that.

Mirko Cro Cop -- Mirko is sort of in the same boat as Arlovski, he looks sometimes undersized and his striking i think would be more effective against LHW's. The fighters who have had recent success against Cro Cop have been able to control him on the ground, Gonzaga did before the famous head kick and Kongo did as well.

Kendall Grove -- He is good at 185 but a drop to 170 with his small frame could be a good idea, i dont think he drops to much (if any) weight to make 185. His height and reach would benefit him well against the 170 lbers.

GSP & Anderson Silva -- This one is only because they are not going to find much more to test themselves at their weight classes. They both need to challenge themselves with bigger fighters and they need to fight each other as well to determine the top P4P guy.

Chris Leben -- He does very well at MW, but if he can make 170 he could be a serious contender and possible future champion. He has come a long way since Anderson Silva embarrassed him, he would be one of the top strikers at 170 and could finally overpower some guys and not have to rely so much on the big right hand.

well as i said the list goes on and on and i just want to get some feedback and opinions on my ideas and other fighters who you would put on this list.
