Rams Camp Notebook, Aug. 4: Quarterbacks, Special Teams, Sirens, and WWE

Ron ClementsAug 4, 2009

The St. Louis Rams had four straight mornings of full-contact drills, so Tuesday afternoon, head coach Steve Spagnuolo decided to take it easy on the team.

Practicing for barely an hour in shells, the Rams worked quickly through 11-on-11 team drills, focusing on mainly pass plays.

Starting quarterback Marc Bulger looked good, and was helped out by the likes of tight end Billy Bajema. The fifth-year player from Oklahoma State had the play of the day with a diving catch near the sideline.

While Marc Bulger was fairly accurate, Brock Berlin and rookie Keith Null were shaky. Berlin struggled with low throws while Null repeatedly threw into coverage.

While the second and third team offenses were facing the defense, the first teamers were behind them doing walk throughs.

For the first time in camp, the Rams also worked extensively on kickoff returns and seemingly half the team rotated through. Larry Grant, Eric Butler, C.J. Ah You, John Greco, Chris Ogbonnaya, Jerome Johnson, Antwon Burton, Darell Scott, Quinton Culberson, Gary Gibson, Antonio Pittman, Todd Johnson, David Vobora, Cord Parks, Victor Adeyanju, Roy Scheuning, James Laurinaitis, Chris Draft, Bradley Fletcher, Daniel Fells, David Roach, Craig Dahl, Roger Allen and Bajema all took part in at least one kick return.

There were just two pairs of return men, with receivers Donnie Avery and Derek Stanley teaming up, as well as running backs Samkon Gado and Kenneth Darby.

Not participating in practice Tuesday were tight end Joe Klopfenstein and fullback Mike Karney.

Following the uneventful, brisk, up-tempo practice, the highlight of the afternoon came five minutes later when offensive lineman Adam Goldberg's two-year-old son, Gabe, turned on the siren of the fire department's Club Car. It took a full minute for Rams' personnel to figure out how to turn it off.

Punter Donnie Jones was near the pimped out golf cart when "Little Goldie" set off the siren, so Goldberg yelled, "Hey, Donnie, how about stopping your son from turning on the siren."

Rookie linebacker James Laurinaitis was a media favorite following Tuesday's practice. He mildly boasted about his grade point average at Ohio State and said he hopes to attend WWE Monday Night Raw at Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Aug. 17.

Laurinaitis is the son of former pro wrestler Joe Laurinaitis, better known as Animal of the Road Warriors and Legion of Doom fame. His uncle John is still an executive with WWE, and would like James to attend.
