MacKay also provided further details about ongoing treatment the swimmer is undergoing:

Phelps tweeted a statement following the plea:

Saliqa Khan of WBALTV noted at the time that Phelps was pulled over by police after going 84 mph in a 45 mph zone about 1:40 a.m. on Sept. 30. Police said the swimmer told them he had three or four drinks but performed poorly on the field sobriety test.

After the arrest was reported, Phelps posted an apology on social media:

Childs Walker of The Baltimore Sun also reported a note from the trial pointing toward Phelps' future:

Phelps had just begun to ramp up his comeback efforts with an eye toward the 2016 Summer Olympics when the incident occurred. Steve Almasy of CNN reported in early October that USA Swimming suspended Phelps for six months for violating the team's code of conduct.

Phelps will be eligible to return to competitive action in April. His plans once the suspension comes to an end remain unclear, however.
