Why Derek Anderson Shouldn't Be Traded

Shane Quinn Aug 4, 2009

Recently, the Minnesota Vikings quarterback situation has been on shaky ground lately. Tavaris Jackson, the QB who has the edge in the quarterback controversy up in Mankato, Minnesota, had suffered a MCL sprain, who could put him out of commission and will  make him miss a couple of practices. People in Cleveland have been suggesting that they trade Derek Anderson to Minnesota. Good idea? I think not.

Losing Anderson would be detrimental to this team, because really, it leaves the team with no bonafide backups and leaves us with Brett Ratliff. I think it would suck to trade him to Minnesota, and watch him become a superstar up there. It would be just our luck.

People always tell he's a god-awful quarterback, but I think I don't believe that one bit. I think with the right pieces, Anderson could possibly blossom into a excellent quarterback. But there are so many variables in how a quarterback develops or plays. You know, maybe Reciever A didn't run his routes correctly or Reciever B drops the football too much. *Cough,Braylon Edwards*

Also, Anderson has experience in the NFL, which helps immensly because experience helps a quarterback out a lot and Anderson is only 26. There's a lot of upside in Anderson. Anderson has all the physical tools to be an NFL quarterback. He has the big arm to throw to receivers, and the skill set to be an elite QB. However, what stands in the way of his elite skills, is the mental part of it.

Last year, whenever Anderson would throw an accurate throw to Edwards, Edwards would drop it and Anderson's confidence would shatter like glass. That causes a bit of concern because you don't want a quarterback that has a fragile ego. Also, Anderson often gets scared under pressure and gets happy feet. That's what makes an NFL QB. Pressure is what tells you about a quarterback.

Mangini, the new coach of the Cleveland Browns, intends to implement strategies to see how each quarterback responds to mental pressure.

I wish Anderson well in the Quarterback Competition, and hopes that he tries his best understanding his mistakes and actually move forward and make progress, instead of regression.
