My Thoughts About The Magic's Offseason
After a trip to NBA Final for the first time in many years, the Magic started the offseason shortly after the game 5 was over. They went to the trade market to get VC plus Ryan Anderson and also get Brandon Bass and Matt Barnes from the free agent market, although they lost Hedo Turkoglu, Courtney Lee and two other role players through free agent and trade market as well.
There are 11 players who have fully guaranteed contracts, and they need to sign two to four players to reach the league minimum of the roster numbers (12 actives and one inactive, teams may have a maximum of three players in the inactive list so the total number can reach 15).
They may want to sign an additional point guard and true big man as the depth of those two positions are not enough if someone gets hurt in mid-season (Dwight Howard and/or Jameer Nelson). Since they already use all of the MLE to sign Brandon and Matt, the options they have for now is the bi-annual exception, which they can sign one or more players at a little less than $2 million total this season, or resign the free agents from the own team.
The Magic's roster has one of the most complete rosters in the league. At this point, all they need to do is resign all three players who played for them last season. Adonal Foyle (Center/Power forward) and Tyronn Lue (Point guard) both have lots of experiences to bring this team deep to the playoff and Jeremy Richardson (Shooting guard) will provide the depth in that position when VC retire by the end of his contract.
If they want to use to bi-annual exception, their options include Mikki Moore and/or Bruce Bowen. Both of them can play D and provide great experience in crunch time down the road. If there is no major injury, I fully expect the Magic will go deep in the playoff this season, but instead of the Magic won 4-2 against the Cavs last season, the Cavs will beat them 4-2 to reach the final this time.
