Borussia Dortmund vs. Wolfsburg: Winners and Losers from Bundesliga Game
Borussia Dortmund were forced to share their points with Wolfsburg on Wednesday night when the two sides met at the Westfalenstadion on a cold, wet German evening and ultimately failed to find a winner between them.
Considering the fortunes of both sides in the Bundesliga so far this season, with Wolfsburg in second place and Dortmund fighting relegation, one would have considered Dieter Hecking's travelling team to be considered favourites for the tie, yet as we saw, it was a very level match between two excellent teams.
Jurgen Klopp's team now go in to their final match of 2014 against Werder Bremen with just four wins from their opening 16 games. All three points will be an absolute must if they hope to enjoy their break outside the bottom spots in the Bundesliga.
Here are the winners and losers from Wednesday's 2-2 draw.
Winner: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
1 of 5
Much has been made of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's hot-and-cold form for Dortmund over the course of this season.
A smart, quick player who has proven himself at the club since joining, at times this season he has looked at odds with the opponents in front of him.
Yet on Wednesday against Wolfsburg, the Gabonese forward once again looked his best in Dortmund's counter-attacking system.
His opening goal for the home side now stacks alongside goals against Schalke, Arsenal and Galatasaray as well as an assist against Bayern Munich. Aubameyang may not be as prolific as hoped this season, but he certainly looks to be a big-game player.
Loser: Mitch Langerak
2 of 5
No one seems to be truly infallible at Dortmund this season, as the club's current in-form player Mitch Langerak found himself at fault against Wolfsburg this week.
The Australian goalkeeper has offered a real breath of fresh air between the posts at the Westfalenstadion since coming in for Roman Weidenfeller, yet on Wednesday night looked just as vulnerable as the man he was supposed to replace.
Although much of the blame for Wolfsburg's first-half goal can go down to Sebastian Kehl—who truly showed his age when he hacked down Luis Gustavo on the edge of the box—Klopp and his side would have still expected the goalkeeper to save such a shot from De Bruyne.
We await to see how this affects his claims to the first team against Werder Bremen on Friday.
Winner: Kevin De Bruyne
3 of 5
At times throughout this game, Wolfsburg looked troubled with what Dortmund offered in attack, yet thanks to their boy wonder, Kevin de Bruyne, they were able to fight back with just as much impetus in front of goal.
The Belgian playmaker has been in exceptional form this season and is truly thriving at Wolfsburg under Hecking. And he wasted little time against Dortmund in proving himself to be one of the best in the Bundesliga today.
From his central role behind the striker, De Bruyne picked up the ball in all areas of the field and took great pleasure in dancing past Dortmund's defence and setting up his colleagues time and time again.
Although his goal came from a fantastic set piece, the attacking midfielder's exceptional movement and passing in open play was quite simply a step above the rest.
Loser: Sebastian Kehl
4 of 5
Although we would have probably considered Wolfsburg as favourites ahead of this tie, the pressure to pick up all three points would have undoubtedly been firmly placed on the shoulders of Klopp and his players.
At home, with their fans cheering them on, Dortmund could beat anyone, and it looked like such a scenario was unfolding against Wolfsburg, if not for some silly mistakes once again undermining a decent team effort.
We've already discussed Langerak's fault for the opening goal and touched upon the shared blame with Kehl, but in truth the senior midfielder looked really out of touch for much of the game.
Wolfsburg would ultimately walk away from the Westfalenstadion with a point in hand, and it's hard to imagine the reasons why without considering Kehl's poor challenge for the first goal and then his poor marking with Naldo for Wolfsburg's second.
An unquestionable legend and loyal servant to the club, but on this night he ultimately proved to be the instrument of Dortmund's downfall.
Winner: Ciro Immobile
5 of 5
If one man deserves any credit for what Dortmund achieved on Wednesday night, it was Italian striker Ciro Immobile, who put on a truly season-defining performance against Wolfsburg.
The Italian's assist for Aubameyang in the opening stages of the game was in itself worthy of as much praise as any goal, as the forward dinked towards the byline before cushioning in a perfectly weighted cross for his teammate. It was a cross that truly unlocked the Wolfsburg defence and made a goal out of nothing.
The striker huffed and puffed for his goal, despite doing everything else right, and finally got his reward for all the hard work with a wonderful solo effort in the 74th minute.
Immobile had put the game in Dortmund's hands and truly defined just what he was capable of in the Bundesliga.
