Breaking Down the 2014 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas
As one of the premier high school all-star games in the nation, the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas will display many top college football prospects. With strong ties to the Carolinas, many of the players will be going to school in the stacked Southeastern Conference.
For fans of the SEC and the surrounding conferences, this will be a good chance to see some of the stars of the future, even though the weather may not be ideal, per Fred Cunningham of WSPA-TV:
On the North Carolina side, several players are drawing heavy interest. According to Barton Simmons of 247Sports, defensive tackle and Tennessee commit Shy Tuttle looked unstoppable in the first day of practice and should be a force in both the Shrine Game and at the collegiate level.
Another star who will be on display is running back Johnny Frasier. Frasier, who is committed to Florida State, is the No. 5 running back in the country, according to 247Sports' composite ratings, and all eyes will be on how he handles the pressure of big-game action.
Simmons shared the following insight regarding Frasier:
"Princeton (N.C.) High School running back Johnny Frasier is ranked by 247Sports as the top running back in the country. That's notably higher than the rest of the recruiting industry's placement but we feel great about his lofty position after Monday. Frasier is a thick powerful looking back and while a practice setting isn't always a great showcase for a back, Frasier turned heads regularly. The 5-11, 220-pounder has an outstanding jump cut in his repertoire, he can really accelerate through the hole and he's not going to get slowed up by arm tackles.
"
On the South Carolina side, the biggest draw for fans is offensive lineman Zack Bailey. At 6'5" and 315 pounds , Bailey has been a dominant force in practices thus far and looks to be the most talented interior lineman involved in the Shrine Game, per Simmons. If Bailey plays well in the middle, the entire South Carolina team should perform well.
Bailey’s job will be to help protect quarterback and Clemson commit Kelly Bryant. Simmons heaped praise on the prospect after practice for the Shrine Game but also pointed out some major flaws, including his inconsistency. With the arm strength and the physical ability to be mobile in the pocket, he will be a force at the next level if he can correct his consistency issues.
Bryant already has intriguing size at 6'4.25" and 205 pounds, but his accuracy and decision-making will be a focal point.
With both teams boasting talented lineups full of collegiate prospects, college football fans owe it to themselves to become acquainted with the names. The next big star may break out at the 2014 Shrine Game.
