Ranking the Biggest Teases on the PGA Tour

Mike DudurichDec 15, 2014

He is a great young man, the kind of youngster who will make a great ambassador for golf for years to come.

Rickie Fowler is also a player poised to become dominant on the PGA Tour.

But he's also among the biggest teasers on the circuit as well. And the definition of that is a guy just full of talent who shows flashes of the kind of brilliance he's capable of but hasn't taken that next big step toward greatness.

That takes nothing from his status in the game, but it does make for some good conversation.

Check out this list of teasers.

8. Nick Watney

Nick Watney got hot once but appears to have wasted a lot of talent.

Nick Watney won the World Golf Championship-Cadillac Championship in 2011.

He also won the AT&T National later that same year and The Barclays in 2012.

Those were the latest of his five PGA Tour wins and gave hope to his fans that he was on the road to reaching what appeared to be his potential when he picked up his first win in 2007 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Since then, however, he's played 55 events and has one second-place finish in that time.

Again, he's another guy who has done plenty of teasing but hasn't come through in the game's biggest moments.

7. Hunter Mahan

Hunter Mahan is a talented, majorless player on the PGA Tour.
Hunter Mahan is a talented, majorless player on the PGA Tour.

Hunter Mahan has won six times since 2007 and has earned over $25 million in that time.

That makes him a very good player, one who probably should have a more sparkling resume than he does.

He's played in 36 majors and has yet to post a top-three finish.

Yes, he's had a couple of forgettable moments in the Ryder Cup, but keep in mind he's good enough to have made three Ryder Cup teams.

It's another example of being good, but to this point, not quite good enough.

6. Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia was for many years a star in Ryder Cups, but he has not been able to bag a major.
Sergio Garcia was for many years a star in Ryder Cups, but he has not been able to bag a major.

If Sergio Garcia intended to follow in the footsteps of the late, great Seve Ballesteros, he's come up a little short of being anywhere near that level.

He came to professional golf with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm but has only won 27 times around the world, eight of those on the PGA Tour.

He's participated in 65 majors and has 19 top 10s, including four top fives. Like Poulter, he's been dynamite in Ryder Cups but has just two wins on this side of the Atlantic since 2008.

Garcia will always be regarded as a guy who had a nice career but one also marked by unfulfilled potential.

5. Bill Haas

Bill Haas won it all in 2011, but he hasn't done much since.
Bill Haas won it all in 2011, but he hasn't done much since.

When Bill Haas pulled off a miracle shot from the water's edge in the 2011 Tour Championship, that led to him winning the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship and the $11.4 million.

That win led the golf world to believe that Jay Haas' son was about to take the next step up, but that hasn't been the case.

It's not that he's done nothing, because the 2014 season was the first time he hadn't won in five.

But his record in the majors has been awful. In 21 career starts in golf's biggest events, Haas has yet to post a top 10.

4. Jason Day

Jason Day is on the verge of great things, but he hasn't been able to break through.
Jason Day is on the verge of great things, but he hasn't been able to break through.

Jason Day has superstar written all over him.

The young man from Down Under arrived on the PGA Tour with nearly as much game as hype. But all that hype and all that game have yielded just a pair of wins, the most recent coming in the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play in February.

In April 2013, Day led the Masters with a couple of holes to play, and it could have been him instead of Adam Scott becoming the first Australian to win a green jacket. But a couple of late bogeys took him out of that chance.

Thumb, wrist and back injuries have played a part in slowing Day's progress and keeping him in that teaser category.

3. Ian Poulter

6 of 8
Ian Poulter's enthusiasm is legendary, but his resume is still lacking.
Ian Poulter's enthusiasm is legendary, but his resume is still lacking.

Judged by what he's done on this side of the ocean, Ian Poulter is a better-than-average, good player on the PGA Tour. He won once in the United States, the 2010 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play.

Only once since 2006 has he not won at least $1 million, and a couple of years he cracked the $2 million mark.

Poulter has registered 29 top 10s over that span.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Poulter has earned a reputation as a fierce Ryder Cup competitor, and he has 12 victories on the European Tour.

Fans in the United States would love to get a taste of that excitable Poulter we see on TV, but so far, all we've gotten is the tease.

2. Matt Kuchar

7 of 8
Matt Kuchar, left, is the All-American boy without a major title.
Matt Kuchar, left, is the All-American boy without a major title.

Matt Kuchar has won at least once each of the last three years.

During that time he's won over $13 million, which only justifies the viewpoint many people have of him that he is a moneymaking machine.

But the fact he still hasn't won a major title at age 36 verifies that he's a moneymaking machine.

Kuchar has three top-five finishes over those three years in the Masters and has played, for the most part, fairly well in the other majors.

We know he's a good player and a very successful one. And because he hasn't won a major, that's the biggest teased.

1. Rickie Fowler

8 of 8
Rickie Fowler is close but hasn't gotten his first major yet.
Rickie Fowler is close but hasn't gotten his first major yet.

He is one of golf's rising young stars, but he spent the summer of 2014 teasing us.

Rickie Fowler was in the hunt a lot, starting with the Masters. He finished in the top five of all four majors and produced 10 top-10 finishes over all.

Fowler was in the mix with Jordan Spieth as they tried to chase down Rory McIlroy, who had a spectacular season of his own.

But the bottom line with Fowler is that, despite his near-misses in 2014, he still hasn't won since the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship.

The time has come for the 26-year-old to win and win big as he has shown he has the potential to do.
