Bob Arum Sounds Off on Timothy Bradley vs Diego Chaves' Controversial Split Draw

Joseph ZuckerDec 13, 2014

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum didn't beat around the bush when he commented on the draw between Timothy Bradley and Diego Chaves on Saturday night.

Arum reserved most of his ire for judge Julie Lederman, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael:

"

"I don't understand anymore," said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, Bradley's promoter, adding that he thought scoring was as bad as the scoring that gave Bradley a hugely controversial split-decision win against Manny Pacquiao in their first fight. "Julie Lederman [of New York] should not be allowed to judge in this state anymore. That was the worst decision. I had it 8-4 for Bradley. I could see it 7-5. OK, maybe even 114-114. But her scorecard for Chaves was an absolute disgrace."

"I thought Bradley looked good," Arum added. "I thought Bradley won the fight relatively easily. But he was less effective once his eye closed, but he still won. I am so fed up with this whole [judging] system. It's really, really wrong."

The judges officially ruled the fight a draw, with one judge apiece ruling the fight in Bradley's and Chaves' favor and another scoring it even, per HBO Boxing:

In terms of numbers, Bradley had the obvious advantage. While he threw two extra punches, he also landed 73 more than Chaves:

As Arum posited, most would've given seven or eight of the 12 rounds to Bradley. The indignation at the result was near universal. Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole was flabbergasted that any judge would fail to score the fight in favor of Bradley:

Rafael was also among the critics:

Boxing writer Francisco A. Salazar wondered how detrimental of an impact this fight will have on the sport as a whole:

Arum mentioned a potential rematch between Bradley and Chaves, but whatever the result, a second fight wouldn't remove the sour taste from this bout out of the fans' and writers' mouths.

Meanwhile, boxing continues to make news for all the wrong reasons. The sport's critics will have even more ammunition following Saturday's draw.
