Hudl's Top 5 High School Football Game-Winning Plays of 2014

Sean HojnackiDec 22, 2014

These game-winning plays encompass all manner of thrilling finishes, ranging from a linebacker kicking a long field goal for the win to improbable touchdowns on a Hail Mary—not to mention the obligatory thrilling kickoff return. There's even a basketball player calling for an unexpected lateral pass near the goal line.

Clark Nelson

1 of 5

Clark Nelson, a senior at Georgia's Oconee County High School, normally plays linebacker. However, when his team needs a 47-yard field goal to win the game, he's the guy they call. Watch him devastate the boys from Morgan County and thrill the Oconee fans with this boot through the uprights.

Conor Powell

2 of 5

Conor Powell is a two-way standout for the varsity squad at West Jefferson High School in Ohio. He plays both wide receiver and cornerback, so you know he's fast.

If you need more proof of his speed, look no further than this sick kickoff return, which is highlighted by the tackle he breaks near his own 40-yard line and the deke he puts on to beat the last defender near the opposition's 40-yard line.

Reakwon Jones

3 of 5

Reakwon Jones has been cooking up some mouthwatering plays for Mosley Varsity in Lynn Haven, Florida, so it's no wonder that he's committed to play college ball at Florida Atlantic University. He also taught the defense about the importance of knocking down a desperation pass with this play.

Noah Hillman

4 of 5

Noah Hillman plays both football and basketball for Lourdes High School in Rochester, Minnesota, so he knows about the power of the assist.

On this game-deciding rush, after the initial handoff gets stood up short of the end zone, a chest pass to the foul line comes out of the scrum and leads to a drive down the lane for the dramatic game-winning layup—er, actually, that's a touchdown. Talk about a give-and-go!

Josh Matthews

5 of 5

These high school students can be forgiven for not remembering a play that occurred in 1984, but arguably the most famous Hail Mary pass of all time occurred that year. It was thrown by soon-to-be Heisman Trophy-winner Doug Flutie to Gerard Phelan as Boston College shocked Miami.

In this case, Josh Matthews played the role of Phelan, leading Louisiana's Dunham High School to a thrilling victory.
