Diego Simeone Being Forgotten Amid Jurgen Klopp Hysteria
Diego Simeone was arguably the best manager in Europe during the 2013/14 season with Atletico Madrid. The club's Liga and Europa League triumphs, as well as their appearance in the Champions League final, led to Simeone's nomination for the FIFA World Coach of the Year award.
Despite the Argentinian being linked with Premier League clubs like Manchester City, via Nick Miller of the Guardian, Simeone is currently playing second-fiddle behind Borussia Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp, who's been suggested as a replacement for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal by Jeremy Wilson at The Telegraph.
Klopp has had a fantastic few years with Dortmund. He captured back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012 over Bayern Munich, including a domestic double in the latter season, plus two German Supercups. The 47-year-old has rightfully earned this praise, but due to his team being paired with Arsenal in their Champions League group, the stories about his next job began to pop up everywhere.

Dortmund has had their struggles this season. Injuries have depleted the squad, but that's probably due to Klopp's high-pressing system. That fatigue has seemingly affected BVB's slow start in the Bundesliga. However, they've still managed to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.

In Spain, Simeone, unlike Klopp, is still overachieving in all competitions. Atletico are just four points behind crosstown rivals Real Madrid and two back of Barcelona. They've also conceded just 12 goals, second only to Los Cules, who've allowed seven.
Their performances in the Champions League have been equally as impressive. Atletico topped Group A with 13 points and just one defeat (their opening game against Olympiakos in Athens). They've accumulated five consecutive clean sheets during their unbeaten streak in Europe this season.
Defenders Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez have been big contributors. The latter has excelled during the absence of Miranda, who's out with a thigh injury. Most of their success is down to Simeone. He's an excellent motivator.
Simeone's system is also difficult to break down. The central midfielders help crowd the centre of the pitch, which makes it hard for opponents to penetrate the defence.
If the team decides to play down the flanks and cross, Godin, Miranda or Gimenez can easily win the aerial duel for the ball and clear out the danger. This is the reason that the team rarely concedes a goal.
When examining both Klopp and Simeone, they should both be linked to any big job in Europe. Both managers are similar, so it's not like one will succeed at a certain club better than the other. Either of them would do well wherever they go.
However, Simeone has been forgotten. He was once the flavour of the month, just like Klopp was as recently as a year ago. Now, the German has captured the attention of the media again.
That could be down to Simeone wanting to stay with Atletico, as reported by the Press Association (h/t the Daily Mail). Klopp stated in a PA interview, passed on by BT Sport, that, besides Germany, England is the only other country where he would work.
On the other hand, Simeone contradicted his comment about wanting to stay at the Vicente Calderon and told French TV programme Telefoot that he's "notoriously impatient" and "can't stay for 10 years with the same club," per Dominic Raynor of Goal.
Le Parisien also claims that the Argentinian is a favourite for the PSG job (h/t French football reporter Jonathan Johnson):
El Cholo cannot be forgotten. He's one of the best coaches in the world and still has a competitive team, despite losing key players like Diego Costa, Filipe Luis and many others over the years.
