Devon Alexander vs. Amir Khan: Live Stream, Odds and Projected Winner

Nate LoopDec 12, 2014

Amir Khan should be happy with the $950,000 purse he is set to earn when he takes on Devon Alexander in a welterweight bout on Saturday night in Las Vegas. He's already invested some of his earnings into the bout in the form of his in-ring attire.

According to BBC Sport, Khan is set to wear shorts worth £20,000 and very much worthy of the MGM Grand venue. The boxing trunks should be a spectacle in an of themselves, as they are "made of white nappa leather, silk and featuring a waistband made of 24-carat gold thread," per BBC.

It's this brand of showmanship that makes Khan (29-3, 19 KOs) a big draw in the welterweight ranks and yet another in the long line of brash, bold and big-talking boxers.

Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs), who hails from the rough Hyde Park neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, doesn't appear to see any need for Khan's attitude and antics. To him, it's merely overcompensation.

"If you’re as good as he says he is you don’t have to tell everyone. You don’t gloat. Because the cockier you are the harder you fall," said Alexander, via the Daily Mail's Jeff Powell.

It's a bold statement for a boxer making his first foray onto a Las Vegas canvas, but boxing wouldn't be the sport it is without competitors brimming with self-belief and machismo.

Alexander-Khan should be an entertaining match predicated on speed and ring movement and a showcase of two punchers working their way toward bouts against the biggest names in the division.

Here is all the necessary fight info so fans can catch this contentious matchup.

Preview and Projected Winner

Khan's ambitions to be ranked among the best in the sport are no secret. In an interview with Bleacher Report's Will Tidey, Khan stated he wants to prove himself against the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

"Of course, I'd love to fight either Floyd or Manny," he said. "Manny and I used to train and spar together, so I know what he is capable of. I also know that I can beat him. If I was to get a chance to prove that, then I think it would be a great spectacle for boxing and a great fight for the fans to see."

If Khan wants a fight with either of those two legendary boxers, he will need a convincing win over Alexander.

King Khan is renowned for his speed in the ring, a trait he used to devastating effect in a unanimous-decision victory over Luis Collazo in May of this year. Khan's quick hands and 71-inch reach could pose a problem for Alexander, who struggled against the quick-hitting Timothy Bradley in a loss back in 2011.

However, Alexander has grown as a fighter since then and believes he matches up quite well with Khan's fighting style.

"There's going to come a time in the fight when I'll put pressure on him and rough him up a bit," he said, according to Sky Sports. "I know he doesn't like that."

Indeed, Khan doesn't seem to take hard shots quite as well as other current elite fighters. The Bolton man was knocked down three times in a technical-knockout loss to Danny Garcia in 2012 and went down once in the fourth round in a win over Julio Diaz in April 2013.

Bad Left Hook's Samuel Chen details when Alexander might have his best shot at getting through to Khan for some devastating power punches:

"

While Amir Khan's speed makes his combination punching game so difficult to deal with, it is also contributes to his greatest weakness: a porous defense. Khan is most open during his initial blitz after he finds his range with his jab because his footwork, though improving, is nowhere near as fast or dexterous as his hands.

"

If Alexander can wade through Khan's array of jabs and straights and get in close, he might be able to score a knockdown in this fight. However, Alexander doesn't possess elite power, with just 14 knockouts in 28 career fights.

If he doesn't get to Khan early and work at his weak chin, the British boxer should be able to hold on and win out on points by using a defensive jab and an array of quick-striking combinations.

It's going to be a close bout, and considering the overall strength of the welterweight division, Khan will probably need to win convincingly to ensure he's next in line to fight either Mayweather or Pacquiao.

Bradley is fighting Diego Chaves on the same night and in the same city as Khan and surely has title aspirations of his own, especially after losing to Pacquiao in April of this year.

Of course, a fight between Khan and any other fighter is going to be second to a potential titanic bout between Mayweather and Pacquiao. Saturday night should go a long way toward setting up the future big-ticket bouts in the welterweight ranks.

Prediction: Khan wins via unanimous decision
