Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com weighed in on what Cannon's extension means from a roster standpoint:
Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald broke down the contract details:
Cannon has appeared in all 13 games for the Patriots in 2014, logging three starts. The 26-year-old was a fifth-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft and is capable of playing both guard and tackle, so it's no surprise New England wanted to hold onto him due to his versatility.
Although he has never settled in as a steady starter in Foxboro, there's a chance for Cannon to make a more noticeable impact in the years to come.
Left tackle Nate Solder is entering a contract year in 2015, while guard Dan Connolly will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason (h/t Spotrac.com). According to the Patriots' official depth chart, Cannon is No. 2 at both positions, and he's also the primary backup to right tackle Sebastian Vollmer.
Quarterback Tom Brady's brilliance and the schematics the Patriots use to protect him and keep the offense balanced with the running game have been staples of New England's sustained greatness.
Cannon offers insurance to maintain that tradition of excellence, thanks to his familiarity with the intricate system.
