Timberwolves Sign 7'0'' Ryan Hollins: How Will We Howl?

Timber WolfAug 3, 2009

Almost unknown to the NBA hardcore fanbase, Ryan Hollins has not seen consistent minutes throughout his NBA career.

In his first year, he has been a Charlotte Bobcat and Dallas Maverick. The Minnesota Timberwolves have just signed the Restricted free agent today, and I have to say, I'm happy.

Not only do we now have two seven footers in Hollins and Pecherov, they are both young and have very unique play styles, giving the Wolves more flexibility. But this is about Hollins, and I do believe that Hollins can complement Al Jefferson and Kevin Love well, and VERY WELL.

Let's not look at the 10 minutes per game that he averaged over the season, or the 11 minutes per game he averaged in the Conference Semifinals, but rather the performance of Ryan Hollins. Please consider:

  1. Eight Rebounds, three blocks and two points in 19 minutes in the Conference Semifinals.
  2. Nine Points, eight rebounds and four Blocks in 22 minutes against Denver in the regular season.
  3. Twelve rebounds, seven points and two blocks in 26 minutes against Cleveland in the regular season.

He's had games where he's had blocks in less than 10 minutes. Point blank, Ryan Hollins is a inside shot blocking presence that brings energy and aggressiveness to the court.

It's hard not to see him succeed with him being 7'0", and seeing at least 20 minutes consistently on the court.

Please Consider:

  1. No. 7 in Offensive Rebounds per 48 Minutes.
  2. No. 11 in Rebounds per 48 Minutes
  3. No. 14 in Blocks per 48 Minutes.

That is good for a guy who only averaged 10 minutes a game. It appears that Ryan Hollins is like Kevin Love, a guy who makes the most of his minutes on the court.

Ryan Hollins has a lot of upside, and I see him being a sixth man, maybe even a starter if he can get consistent blocks and rebounds.

With Ryan Hollins with Al Jefferson and Kevin Love, Al Jefferson might not have to play Center the whole time on the court. Of course, when the season starts, Jefferson will start at center, but I see Pecherov and Hollins getting some minutes, thus making Kevin Love's and Al Jefferson's job's easier.

Outside of the Stats

Just watching him in his games, Ryan Hollins brings so much to the game:

  1. High Energy: He plays with so much intensity, his most watched moment would have to be his put back dunk over Tim Duncan. He was called for a technical because of his high energetic reaction. Incredible high energy.
  2. High Athleticism: Ryan Hollins is an incredible athlete, and to be his size, it's something that really makes him special. One display of athleticism would be Ryan Hollins put back dunk over Anderson Varejao.
  3. High Defensive Intensity: Ryan Hollins has the stats to prove it, but he's incredibly intimidating. One of his best blocks would have to be against the San Antonio Spurs on George Hill. He has an emotional intensity that's going to compliment Al Jefferson.
  4. Others: He moves well without the ball and with the ball. With Flynn and possibly Rubio, that is a dangerous combination of athleticism, passing and size. One example would be an Assist of the Night from Jason Kidd on a alley oop.
