4 Reasons Why Roberto Mancini Will Turn Inter Milan's Season Around

Anthony LopopoloDec 10, 2014

Roberto Mancini is still waiting for his first win in Serie A in his second act as coach of Inter.

It's not like he's been back for a while. Change hardly comes after three matches.

"A coach can't change everything in a heartbeat," said Inter midfielder Mateo Kovacic (h/t Goal). "Unfortunately, we're in one of those periods and we just need to look forward. We've got a good team but we're making too many errors."

Here are four reasons why Mancini will push Inter up the standings.

No More Three-Man Defence

1 of 4

Mancini freed Inter from the rigidity of former coach Walter Mazzarri's system, including the doomed three-man defence. Of course, his defenders are still not good enough (Nemanja Vidic has been the most notable of disasters) and the switch back to a four-man back line is not going to yield instant results.

Andrea Ranocchia, for one, is just not good enough, and he does not look especially comfortable on the ball. Furthermore, Dodo is wasteful and a poor fullback.

These are problems that can be addressed in January, but at least there's more numbers at the back.

Mancini Knows How to Win

Mancini has won a trophy everywhere as a manager.

He is perhaps not everyone's favourite coach, mainly because he likes to play an old-fashioned game where scoring isn't the most important thing.

For Mancini, it's about defending and keeping the game clean. "I like 1-0 wins," he said in 2011

Mancini has the right philosophy, and it worked years before at Inter.

Mancini Has Been Here Before—Literally

Between 2004 and 2008, Mancini built the spine of that great Inter side that went on to win the treble with Jose Mourinho.

In fact, Mancini has even taken credit for Mourinho's success. Mancini said, Inter "played very bad football and we changed this.

“[Mourinho] took a team that, like Manchester City, I had built, a team that had a strong mentality.”

The year before Mancini took over the first time, Inter had rolled through three different coaches. He was the one that brought stability, and he can do it again.

January Is Coming

4 of 4

The January transfer window gives Mancini a chance to finally put his hands on this squad.

Inter have been linked with a whole bunch of names—among them PSG's Ezequiel Lavezzi, Liverpool's Lucas Leiva and Atletico's Alessio Cerci, per Football Italia.

The window also offers a chance to end those failed experiments—among them Vidic, who could even return to Manchester United, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia).

It's not all bad, as apparently Inter just re-signed their star player Kovacic, according to Tuttosport (h/t SempreInter.com), and Mancini can build on that.
