Captain Virat Kohli led the way with a century as the tourists made a strong reply to Australia's total.

After the hosts declared on their overnight score, India scored rapidly in the morning session and reached 119-2 at lunch.

Shikhar Dhawan was the first man to depart for 25. He looked to drive a Ryan Harris delivery but only succeeded in dragging it on to his middle stump.

Fellow opener Murali Vijay went just before the adjournment for 53 as he poked Mitchell Johnson to Brad Haddin behind the stumps before the left-arm seamer hit Kohli on the helmet.

Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara added 81 runs for the third wicket before Australia spinner Nathan Lyon ended the latter’s innings on 73.

Pujara had hit nine boundaries in his 135-ball innings before watching a tentative forward defence culminate in the ball rolling back onto his stumps.

India reached 192-3 at tea and continued to score briskly in the evening session with a century partnership between Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane.

Rahane had made 62 from just 76 balls when he became Lyon’s second victim, the off-spinner getting some extra bounce that took the glove and the batsman was caught by Shane Watson at slip.

Kohli marched on and reached his seventh Test century off 158 balls with his 12th boundary, clipping Mitchell Marsh to the mid-wicket fence.

It was a welcome return to form for the 26-year-old whose top-score on last summer’s Test series in England was just 39. He was eventually caught by Harris from Johnson's delivery, leaving Wriddhiman Saha to see India through to close of play.

The match, re-arranged after the death of Phillip Hughes, is the first of four Tests as the teams battle for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
