Are the Cleveland Cavaliers Done With Offseason Moves?

Vince ChoiAug 2, 2009

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ offseason started in late June, when they made a trade for Shaq and also re-signed Anderson Varejao to a long-term deal. Then they made a run for Jamario Moon and Anthony Parker to improve their depth of the bench, and they also waived Tarence Kinsey to open up a roster spot.

I like their moves so far, but they're not done yet. They still have some spots to fill to bring them back to the NBA finals this season.

There are 12 players who have fully guaranteed contracts, and they need to sign one to three players to reach the league minimum of the roster numbers (12 actives and one inactive, teams may have a maximum of three players in the inactive list).

They may want to sign an additional shooter/shooting guard and big man as the depth of those two positions are not enough if someone gets hurt mid-season (Zydrunas Ilgauskas and/or Delonte West, as both of them may not start for the Cavs this season).

Since they already use 90 percent of the MLE to sign Jamario and Anthony, the options they have for now is the bi-annual exception, which they can sign one or more players at a little less than $2 million total this season, or use the rest of the MLE, which is unlikely.

My best suggestion is power forward, and the Cavs should sign Joe Smith. A former No. 1 overall pick plus a former Cav, Smith brought a lot to this team the last couple seasons. I truly believe he still has a lot to prove, plus it wouldn't cost much for the Cavs.

At shooting guard, the Cavs should sign Allen Iverson. Another former No. 1 overall pick, he is still one of the best players in the league if he has the right teammates around him. In this team, A.I. doesn't need to be the go-to guy that he used to be, so he can have more room to create favorable matchups, and he can play the point if Mo Williams goes down.

However, I don't think the Cavs will have enough money for both Smith and Iverson, even though they both likely will get one-year deals at the most, unless they make a sign-and-trade with the Pistons, or both of them share the bi-annual.

The last player they should sign is Danny Green, who was their second-round pick in this year's draft. He can be a nice fit in shooting guard with his experience from North Carolina.

Other options include Mikki Moore, as well as Bruce Bowen. Both of them can play D and provide great experience in crunch time down the road. If there is no major injury, I fully expect the Cavs will make it to the finals this season.
