Real Madrid vs. Celta Vigo: Winners and Losers from La Liga Game
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a record-setting 23rd hat-trick in La Liga on Saturday as Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 3-0 to win an 18th successive match in all competitions.
The 29-year-old opened his account from the penalty spot in the 36th minute and competed his brace with a volley from Andreu Fontas' misplaced header in the 65th.
Then, with nine minutes remaining in normal time, he got the treble he was looking for when Marcelo picked him out at the far post.
Overall, there were several standout performances at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, as well as some that were rather less impressive.
Following are the individual winners and losers from the encounter.
Winner: Asier Illarramendi, Who Took His Chance in Madrid's Starting Line-Up
1 of 6
With both Luka Modric and Sami Khedira injured, and with Isco suspended, Asier Illarramendi was given a rare place in Real Madrid's starting line-up on Saturday.
He did not disappoint.
According to Squawka, the midfielder completed 88 percent of his passes over the 90 minutes and, most tellingly, contributed four interceptions.
As ESPN FC columnist Dermot Corrigan pointed out during the match via Twitter, Illarramendi also got plenty of cheers from the Madrid fans during the match.
Loser: Andreu Fontas, Who Accidentally Assisted Ronaldo's Second
2 of 6
Saturday's match was still very much in the balance when Celta Vigo defender Andreu Fontas accidentally helped Cristiano Ronaldo to a second goal in the 65th minute.
While the 25-year-old was generally solid in front of goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez, his misplaced header in his own goalmouth landed squarely at Ronaldo's feet, and the Portugal captain made no mistake from close-range.
Fontas would make three blocks and 11 clearances, as per Squawka, over the course of the match, but his blunder proved decisive.
Winner: Real Madrid's Unbeaten Record, Which Stretched to 18 Matches
3 of 6
With Saturday's win, Real Madrid extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 18 matches and pulled level with Barcelona's all-time record.
It's a mark, described by ESPN FC's Dale Johnson via Twitter, that Los Blancos can surpass in the Champions League next week when they face group-stage rivals Ludogorets.
As pointed out by Squawka, Madrid have outscored their opponents a combined 67-9 during the streak.
They'll next face Ludogorets before taking on Almeria in their final La Liga match before departing for the Club World Cup.
Given their schedule, they may go unbeaten a while longer yet.
Loser: The Real Madrid Therapists, Who Now Have James to Tend to
4 of 6
As if the Real Madrid medical staff weren't busy enough, they'll now have James Rodriguez to tend to.
The Colombia international limped off the pitch with an apparent leg injury on Saturday and, according to the Twitter account of ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, he "walked gingerly down the tunnel" after picking up the knock.
Los Blancos are already without injured midfielders Luka Modric and Sami Khedira, and James could well be requiring treatment in the coming days and weeks as well.
Winner: Cristiano Ronaldo, Who Set La Liga's All-Time Hat-Trick Record
5 of 6
As confirmed by Spanish outlet AS, Cristiano Ronaldo's 23rd La Liga hat-trick set a new record in the Spanish top-flight.
The treble also saw the 29-year-old record his 200th La Liga goal, as revealed by Infostrada Sports.
According to the Twitter account @RMadridHome, Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti praised his talisman after the match, saying: "Cristiano Ronaldo is in top physical shape. He's very motivated and it's an advantage for us to have him with us."
Loser: Celta Vigo's Unbeaten Away Record, Which Ended on Saturday
6 of 6
Celta Vigo came into Saturday's match unbeaten away from home this season and having picked up impressive results away to the likes of Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona.
But their run ended at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, where a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick consigned them to their first defeat on the road in 2014-15.
Celta Vigo will next be away to Malaga in La Liga, where they'll have a chance to build on what is still impressive form away from Estadio Balaidos.
They'll also be away to Sevilla, Espanyol and Getafe in upcoming matches.
