Manchester United Transfer News: Angel Di Maria Reportedly Sounding out PSG

Gianni VerschuerenDec 5, 2014

Reports Angel Di Maria could be interested in a move away from Manchester United—just months after completing a transfer to the Red Devils—continue to gather steam, with Spanish website Fichajes (h/t Metro's Jamie Sanderson) claiming his agent has already held talks with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentina international nearly joined the French champions during the summer and recently admitted he's struggling to adapt to the English weather. He also confessed he misses playing in the Champions League in an interview with Sport magazine's Sarah Shephard:

"

It’s much colder here and it gets dark a lot earlier than in Spain. I have no problem with the food or anything – there is not much difference between what I had in Spain and what I have here. My only problem is with the cold temperatures.
[...] Yes, I do miss Champions League football.

Di Maria previously admitted he joined United because of PSG's issues with UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations, and he refused to rule out a transfer to the French capital in an interview with Telefoot (h/t Metro):

"

PSG had a money problem and they couldn’t buy players. This is the main reason I didn’t go there. A lot of clubs were interested in me. But Manchester United appeared and didn’t go away. They absolutely wanted me and it happened.

[...] Playing in the French league would please a lot of players. Now I’m in the English league. But you never know, there is a lot of movements in football. You can never predict where you’re going to play.

It could have been a good experience to go to Paris. I know I’m still young, perhaps I’ll go to PSG one day. I don’t know how it will all end.

"

While it seems almost absurd to suggest the 26-year-old could leave Old Trafford just months after joining the club, his latest comments and the persistent reports Di Maria isn't happy in England can't be something fans want to read.

The Argentinian has enjoyed a fine start to life in the Premier League, scoring three goals and adding six assists in 11 league appearances, according to WhoScored.com. He's been one of the Red Devils' most consistent performers—an impressive feat for a player who is yet to fully adapt to his new surroundings.

Bleacher Report UK's Ryan Bailey and the Manchester Evening News' Rob Dawson believe his performances have dropped off a little after a scorching start to the season. However, they are overall still quite satisfied with Di Maria's level:

As the Red Devils' marquee signing of the summer, Di Maria became the face of Louis van Gaal's revolution. He's arguably the player responsible for most of the optimism among the fans, and losing him now would be a devastating blow for the club.

PSG's star players have been doing their very best in recent weeks to court the midfielder, with compatriot Javier Pastore telling beIN Sports (h/t Get French Football) he has talked with Di Maria about his summer-long transfer saga:

FFP was the main stumbling block back then, and writing for Bleacher Report, Duncan Castles wonders whether regulations could soon be changed as in the case of Jean-Marc Bosman in 1995.

European courts decided the regulations which were in place at that time went against EU law. Castles believes the same applies when it comes to FFP:

"

[...]Though no case was opened, it seems a matter of time and personality before one is. In June, a professor of competition law and economics at the University of Liege published a paper entitled "'Financial fair play' or an 'oligopoleague' of football clubs?"

Nicolas Petit argued that "a number of aspects suggest that the FFP Regulation is likely to be in violation of EU competition law" and that a legal challenge would force the European Commission to decide its fate.

Jean-Louis Dupont, the lawyer who helped Jean-Marc Bosman force a rewrite of global transfer rules in the mid-'90s, has already taken one claim to the European Commission on behalf of a Belgian player's agent.

"

We won't know for certain whether Di Maria's interest in a transfer to PSG in the near future is fact or fiction unless one of the interested parties actually speaks out. Until that happens, it seems unlikely the Argentinian will leave Manchester any time soon.

The constant speculation and his refusal to rule anything out is worrying, however, and fans of United will have to hope word he could already be talking to the French club is nothing but gossip.
