CvC: Victoria/Tara Is the Greatest Women's Champion Of All Time
First of all, I would like to say sorry for the delay in getting this out, but that wasn't my fault. All that matters is that I eventually got it out, albeit, a few days late!!
The woman of many names. You might know her as Victoria. Maybe as Tara? Or perhaps you just know her as Lisa Marie Varon.
It doesn't matter what you call her, because without a shadow of a doubt, she deserves another name: One of the greatest women's wrestlers of all time.
In my opinion, Tara is currently one of the most underrated performers of any wrestling promotion in the world.
She may not get as much publicity as some of the 'eye candy' on offer right now, but she is truly one of the best all-around athletes in wrestling today.
Lisa Marie Varon first started her career as a body builder and a fitness model during the mid 90's, where she won many amateur titles and competitions, including ESPN2's Fitness America Series in 1997.
In 1998, Varon competed in the Miss Galaxy Competition, during which she was first introduced to Torrie Wilson, who was competing for WCW at the time.
With Wilson's help, she unsuccessfully attempted to gain a WCW contract. However, this encouraged Varon to work at becoming a better athlete with the chance of success at another time.
Later in her fitness career, Varon also befriended female wrestler Trish Stratus who also worked on the competition circuit. Stratus began to give Varon advice on how to break into the wrestling business.
However, Varon would really get her opportunity at wrestling thanks to Chyna.
During training in Los Angeles, Varon would meet Chyna, who encouraged her to send a workout tape to WWF with hope of securing a contract.
This was a good move, as Varon was signed to a developmental contract in early 2000.
From here on out, the career of one of the greatest female technical wrestlers was able to grow and blossom into a now historic legacy.
At Survivor Series 2002, Varon was given her first taste of gold when she beat women's champion Trish Stratus in a hardcore match to secure the Women's championship.
In her first reign, she successfully defended her title against many of the top women wrestlers in WWE at the time, such as Torrie Wilson, Trish Stratus, and Stacy Keibler.
She would hold the belt until Wrestlemania XIX, when she dropped the title to Trish Stratus during a triple threat match that also featured Jazz.
Despite not being in the title picture, Varon would prove to be a dominant force in the WWE Women's division, competing in many historic matches including a victory over Lita in the first ever women's cage match in November 2003.
It was shortly after this that she became a firm fan favourite, adding high flying and risky moves to her resume, such as her signature standing moonsault.
In February 2004, Varon became a two-time women's champion after defeating Molly Holly, Lita and Jazz in a Fatal Four-Way contest.
This would again be a lengthy reign for the talented superstar, who would have the prestige of retaining her title at Wrestlemania XX against Molly Holly in the now infamous 'Title vs Hair' match.
She would eventually lose the title to Trish Stratus, but was always considered a top contender for the belt, regardless of who was champion at the time.
Throughout the next four years, Varon would engage in many feuds with the younger superstars, helping to guide and train them to become many of the wrestlers of today.
During the latter part of her WWE career, she would once again become the number one contender for the championship, beating many of the top female athletes to gain that honour.
In early 2009, Varon announced her semi retirement from wrestling, losing in her final match to Michelle McCool.
During her wrestling sabbatical, Varon would begin to train to compete in MMA, as well as Jiu Jitsu, proving that she was able to excel in any sport that she worked at.
In late May 2009, Varon would debut in TNA under the name of Tara, starting a feud against the Beautiful People.
On July 9, Varon added to her long list of titles when she won the TNA Knockouts title, becoming only the second female wrestler in history to have held both the WWE and TNA women's championships.
In her nine-year career, Varon has held gold for 268 days over three separate reigns, a tremendous achievement considering today's attitude of constant title changes and an unappreciated women's division.
From her beginnings as a fitness model, to her current battle for the TNA Knockouts title, Lisa Marie Varon has accomplished almost everything that is possible.
Her charisma, her talent, her undeniable skill, and her unique style make her one of the most unorthodox performers on the face of the earth.
A rare breed of superb strength and exceptional speed, Varon is always exciting to watch and puts her heart and soul into every match.
Lisa Marie Varon deserves the title of the greatest women's champion of all time, not because she was necessarily the best or had the most chances, but because she is truly great at what she does.
Whether it is destroying all opponents with her feared Widow's Peak or helping to mentor some of tomorrow's superstars, she has done so much to propel women's wrestling to the heights it has reached today.
Lisa Marie Varon. Victoria. Tara.
Whatever you want to call her, just don't ignore her, as she still has it and is determined to prove it!
