Liverpool Transfer News: Joel Campbell Talks Expected, Marco Reus Hope Offered

Rob BlanchetteDec 3, 2014

Liverpool are expected to begin their January transfer window activity with the temporary capture of Arsenal's World Cup starlet Joel Campbell.

Jamie Sanderson of the Metro notes a report from Spanish website Fichajes.net that claims Brendan Rodgers will move for the forward on loan in an attempt to strengthen his attack—adding to his firepower and goal threat until the end of the season.

Campbell has struggled to get game-time despite the recent injury to Olivier Giroud, with Danny Welbeck blocking his path to the first-team.

RECIFE, BRAZIL - JUNE 29: Konstantinos Manolas of Greece and Joel Campbell of Costa Rica compete for the ball during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Round of 16 match between Costa Rica and Greece at Arena Pernambuco on June 29, 2014 in Recife, Brazil. (

The 22-year-old player was a huge success story for his country at the World Cup as Costa Rica surprised the watching public with their battling displays.

And Rodgers is said to be "a huge admirer" of the youngster, as reported by Sanderson.

The London Evening Standard's James Olley recently commented about Campbell's lack of involvement at the Emirates and hinted the player might have now regretted staying under Wenger's wing when he could have departed:

Liverpool have also been offered hope in their long-term pursuit of German world-class starlet, Marco Reus.

Mark Doyle of Goal.com quotes Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke speaking about a possible exit for the individual, with the director confirming that Reus "alone will decide where he will go," saying the attacking player can activate his release clause when he chooses.

The Daily Star's Chisanga Malata writes the Anfield giants have received "their biggest boost yet" concerning Reus, leaping on the back of news that Bayern Munich have had "no contact" with the player about joining them, according to FIFA agent Dirk Hebel who spoke to Kicker.

Reus has proven himself to be one of Europe's top players over the past couple of seasons, with the flying attacker smashing 30 goals in the last two Bundesliga campaigns for BVB, per WhoScored.com.

This is a stunning record for a player who is not the centre point of the attack.

In other news, Liverpool have also been cited with moves for Dortmund's Henrikh Mkhitaryan, per Anthony Chapman of the Express, and highly-rated Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto—as reported by Jamie Sanderson of the Metro.

Liverpool have previously been linked with Jurgen Klopp's playmaker, and Chapman says the coach may now be willing to offload the midfielder.

Sanderson writes that Liverpool are looking to replace Simon Mignolet with Neto, and will offer the stopper £125,000 a week to come to Anfield.

Liverpool might have got back to winning ways with back-to-back wins over Stoke and Leicester, but much work is to be done in January as Rodgers looks to exercise his options. The team have collapsed under the strain of the loss of Luis Suarez, and Rodgers needs to find solutions fast.

Reus would be an outstanding capture for Liverpool but it is highly unlikely he will want to join a team which is not currently stable. He will have the option of a transfer to the very highest echelon of world football and Liverpool will find it hard to compete with this.

Neto's purchase would make much more sense as the growing discourse behind Mignolet grows. The goalkeeper has not settled into the pressure cooker of life on Merseyside—and Rodgers may feel it is time to look elsewhere, as he focuses on his defensive unit.
