SD Huesca vs. FC Barcelona: 3 Things Barca Should Test in Copa Del Rey Tie
Barcelona’s Copa del Rey tie against SD Huesca is not expected to yield much of a challenge for the Catalan giants, but it could prove important. The two-legged affair will give Luis Enrique the chance to tinker with some new tactics and give some fringe players much-needed minutes on the pitch.
The biggest issue with these matches is figuring out how to ensure a solid result while being able to field a weaker-than-normal lineup. Barcelona could easily start anyone on their bench and be expected to easily fly past Huesca, but football can sometimes be unpredictable.
In this article, we will take a look at three things that Enrique could test in the tie against Huesca, while also discussing how important those tactics and moves could be down the line. Keep in mind that Enrique cannot test everything in only two matches, so he will have to be selective.
As always, feel free to get involved in the discussion in the comment section below, and tell us what changes you think the Catalans should make in their Copa del Rey contest!
A 3-4-3 Formation
1 of 3
The 3-4-3 formation is something that has been an enigma at Barcelona for a few years now. Pep Guardiola tested it out several times in his final year at the Camp Nou, and Tito Vilanova and Tata Martino used it sparingly to change things up.
It has yet to be seen under Enrique, though the squad may now be more suited for a three-man defense than ever.
Jeremy Mathieu is the perfect defender to play on the left side of a three-man back line, while there are several options for the other two positions. Marc Bartra, Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano could easily assimilate into the altered formation, and it would be interesting to see again.
With the constant struggles of the Barcelona defense, trying something new cannot really hurt. Utilizing three centre-backs could arguably give the back line more structure, though the roles of Dani Alves and Jordi Alba would have to be looked at in a new light.
Facing a much weaker opponent like Huesca is the perfect opportunity to change things around defensively. It may not show Enrique how the formation would work against real competition, but it would give a good look at diverse tactics.
Another Look at the Double Pivot
2 of 3
Sticking with a defensive focus, Enrique could once again test a double pivot when Barcelona face off with Huesca. It was utilized against Valencia at the weekend with decent success, but giving it more usage could come in handy down the road.
Obviously, the double pivot would be used to give the defense more coverage while also controlling the middle of the park. That kind of structure would help Barcelona dominate possession even more, but it may also be the key to stopping counter-attacks against stronger opposition.
No one can argue that Sergio Busquets and Mascherano aren't two of the best defensive midfielders in the game. They showed that they can play together in the midfield against Valencia, but it is also their ability to drop into the back line that makes them so successful at what they do.
The thought of using them together against counter-attacking opponents is enticing. It would cut down Barcelona’s chances of being caught out of position, but it would also take a lot away from the Blaugrana attacking force.
As is normally the case with a double pivot, there are fewer players to throw forward in attack. Yet, Busquets and Mascherano are very talented passers who can create enough chances to keep the midfield structure afloat.
Regardless, a forward line of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar will never be at a disadvantage. The double pivot could be the key to strengthening Barcelona defensively, and Enrique could start to really test the system against Huesca.
Giving Youth Their Chance to Shine
3 of 3
Above all else, these kinds of Copa del Rey matches are the perfect stage for young talent to shine. Barcelona will likely field a few younger stars against Huesca to give them valuable experience, and fans will certainly be excited to watch the stars of tomorrow in action.
With the chance to rest valuable players, Enrique would be wise to allow the likes of Sergi Samper and Munir El Haddadi to have another shot in the first team lineup. Others, such as Adama Traore and Alen Halilovic, could also feature and would gain a lot from the opportunity.
However, it is also the fringe players fighting for their place in the team that could gain the most from featuring against Huesca.
Specifically, Rafinha and Bartra could force their way into the regular lineup with great displays in the Copa del Rey. Both La Masia graduates could one day be leaders in the team, but they have to earn their place now for that to ever happen down the road.
Enrique is wise enough to know that this two-legged affair could be very valuable for the rest of the season. This is his chance to try some new things and give different players their chances to impress. He should make the most of this opportunity but also be sure that results are still the top priority.
