Dolan's Discounts Strikes Again!
The Cleveland Indians have retired only eight numbers in there history, One of those is Jackie Robinson, Six of them belong to former Indian greats, and the final belongs to us. The Fans. That magic number 455 that is how many games we sold out from June 12th 1995 until April 4th 2001. That until recently was the longest and most impressive sell out streak in sports history. For the those six years the streak spanned we put are hearts on the line and we were slightly rewarded although we were never given the ultimate prize. Even though we were disappointed, we continued to come to the “old ball yard” one big reason was the then owner Richard “Dick” Jacobs. He always tried to make the move that would put us over the top, he traded for the likes of David Justice, Marquis Grissom, and Travis Fryman. He signed veterans like Orel Hershiser, Dennis Martinez, and Eddie Murray all in an attempt to capture this cities first major sports title in 4 decades. Unfortunately in 2000 the late Mr. Jacobs sold the Indians to Larry Dolan who over saw the end of the streak and essentially bad baseball for the last nine years. That has culminated into the worst 389 days of Indians baseball, now I will be the first to admit I did not have to endure the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s. However I feel that what has happened lately is far worse the just being a bad team. As just about everyone knows The Indians traded Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez in the last 72 hours, so you may ask yourself why did you say the last 389 days have been bad because I’m including the C.C Sabathia trade. The Indians have become the first team to trade 2 CY Young award winners in the last two years and one of the best pure hitters I have ever seen. All of this is because of the great Dolan’s Discounts, we are stuck rooting for a team that’s owners are more worried about the bottom line then winning games. Both Martinez and Lee had at least one more year on there contracts, not only did they trade them but they did not receive either teams top prospect. What’s the explanation for this? There is no explanation there is just disappointment, for someone who never thought they would stop being an Indians fan at 3:00 pm today that happened. I will no longer support the Indians while the Dolan’s are the owners I refuse to line there pockets at a major league price for a minor league product. To truly understand our anger Indian fans are putting Larry Dolan in the same category as Art Modell. The notion that the Indians could be contenders in the next couple of years is not only laughable but impossible and I make a grave prediction that the Indians will never contend while the Dolan’s are in charge. Mr. Dolan I remind you of the man your about to induct into the Indians Hall of Fame this weekend Mr. Jacobs and the way he did buisnees he always reciprocated loyalty. Cleveland fans stick together we were there for Game1 through 455 of the streak, We cried together and cheer together, our hearts broke after game 7 of the ‘97 world series and when Bell, Ramirez, and Thome skipped out, and cheered every time we raised a pennant. I feel that I can speak for many fans when I say that today the Indians organization has broken our heart nearly beyond repair simply because they quit trying to win!
