Buick Open Update: Which Tiger Woods Will Show Up Tomorrow?

Michael FitzpatrickJul 31, 2009

Two weeks ago at Turnberry, Tiger Woods couldn’t find the fairway with a Sky Caddie and was unknowingly filming a video on how not to conduct yourself on the golf course —there was club throwing, club slamming, cursing, and an entire back-nine worth of pouting on Friday afternoon.

During the first round of the Buick Invitational, which was played yesterday at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Cub in Flint, Michigan, Woods didn’t perform much better than during his now infamous Turnberry debacle.

Although he found 64 percent of fairways and 78 percent of green in regulation, Woods needed 32 putts, which ranked 130th in a field of 154 players.

But at 7:54am this morning, a completely different Tiger Woods stepped onto the 10th tee (his first hole of the day) at Warwick Hills.

Woods birdied the 10th and 11th, and just for kicks, he decided to chip in from 33 yards for an eagle at the par four 12th, carded a routine birdie at the par-five 13th, and topped off his incredible streak with a 320-yard drive onto the green at the par-four 14th, where he would two-putt for another birdie.

Woods finally had to settle for an ordinary par at the 15th, but followed it up with another birdie at the 16th.

Just in case you don’t have a calculator, Excel spreadsheet, or math tutor around, this means that Woods began his day at seven-under-par through his first seven holes.

At this point, a 59 was looking well within reach, which would have been a 12-stroke improvement upon his opening round 71.

On the 18th—Woods’s ninth hole of the day—one of those ugly red squares finally made its way onto his scorecard when he three-putted for a bogey five.

But, there was no need for panic, club slamming, or cursing because he quickly followed his bogey at the 18th with his sixth birdie of the day at the par-five first.

Woods would slow down with five consecutive pars on his back-nine before birdying two out of his last three holes for a nine-under-par round of 63.

Woods's 63 was his lowest round of the year and was good enough to catapult him up 92 spots on the leaderboard where he now sits in third place, just two strokes behind the leader Michael Letzig.

The afternoon wave has yet to hit the course, so the leaderboard will undoubtedly look different by the conclusion of round two.

But Woods did what he needed to do to get himself back into the tournament.

The only question now is which Tiger Woods will show up tomorrow?
