Event Preview
Race organizers would love another thrilling conclusion similar to the one last year. Thijs Nijhuis and Tommy Kauffmann battled all the way to the finish line before Nijhuis secured the victory in 31 minutes and 22 seconds, one second ahead of Kauffmann.
The women's race wasn't quite as close. Becky Clark picked up the victory in 36 minutes flat. Meagan Nedlo finished second, 36 seconds off the pace.
More than 14,000 participants finished the 2013 race. That number is slated to rise this year with runner Adam Tisue noting the expected increase:
The early weather forecast for the race is promising, albeit a bit cold. The Weather Channel is currently forecasting temperatures in the mid-30s when the race begins, but with only a limited chance of precipitation and manageable winds.
As long as runners don't have to dodge any raindrops, it should be a good morning for racing in and around Ohio's third-largest city.
Plans are also in place for a post-race party at the stadium. It will include live music and refreshments for everybody involved. The official site provided more information on that portion of the day, presented by several of the race's sponsors: "Post Race party is at Paul Brown Stadium. Music and food will be on the plaza level at Paul Brown Stadium. Enjoy lots of McDonald's treats, Brueggers Bagels, Kroger snacks, Dasani Water and lots of Sunny D products and much more. Live band "Nativity Code" will be entertaining us."
That helps showcase that the Thanksgiving morning tradition of so many in the Cincinnati area has become more of an event than simply a race. That's why the numbers continue to grow as it puts the 100th anniversary squarely in the rear-view mirror.
The race goes by quick for many, as illustrated by last year's winners finishing in just over a half-hour, but the memories will live on.
