Overview

Having been outclassed in the last two matches of the series, South Africa head into the fifth and final ODI on Sunday in search of restoring some pride. Australia, meanwhile, are in search of the No. 1 ODI ranking. A win will see the hosts go top of the rankings while South Africa will remain third no matter what.

The ICC ODI rankings might not have much context, but it can offer a little confidence boost heading into a World Cup. The dead-rubber match in Sydney also offers one last chance for South Africa to test their depth.

The visitors have tried some curious combinations during this series, with the oddest of all being persisting with Farhaan Behardien as a middle-order batsman.

Behardien was drafted into the team on late notice, following an injury to JP Duminy, but he hasn't quite lived up to expectations. Duminy's absence has significantly weakened the bowling lineup, and South Africa have, at times, had to resort to part-timers to make up the overs.

It has had mixed results, and South Africa have, at times, gotten themselves into strong positions but thrown them away towards the end of both batting and bowling innings. With the hulking top order slightly out of form, the middle order has struggled to boost the runs. With the bowling, even their ace Dale Steyn has often looked ineffective at the death.

Those issues won't be something that changes overnight, but the more you practise, the better you get. With not much time left to practise before the big tournament next year, it's a very important match for South Africa, who still aren't sure which combination of players works best.

Key players

Australia

Steve Smith has had a great series and his century in the last match will give him a confidence boost heading into the final match. He's scored 187 runs in three games at an average of 93.50. Smith has had a good year, too, and will be looking to build on his recent exploits.

South Africa

Kyle Abbott has played in just one of the four ODIs so far. While he was expensive in the last ODI, Abbott is considered to be one of the best death bowlers in South Africa. If he plays, he has another chance to prove why he is so highly rated and will have to focus on getting his yorkers in to help back up the aggression from Dale Steyn.
