13 Sports Fanbases That Have It the Worst Right Now
These fans are having a real rough go of it lately.
This is not a list of long-suffering sports cities (I see you, Cleveland). Instead, these are teams that, as of this moment, you would not want to be a fan of. These are teams with either little to no hope or teams whose recent performance has paled in comparison to their once-high expectations. Fans are disappointed, frustrated and, in some cases, even embarrassed.
Their coach bailed, their coach will likely be fired, their star player suffered a gruesome leg injury, they haven’t won a game all year, they suffered the most embarrassing loss in World Cup history…you get the picture.
Shockingly enough, I can’t even put the Chicago Cubs on this list (on their own anyway), because there is currently a rather bright glimmer of hope (whether legitimate or not) on Chicago’s North Side.
Here we go. I present to you a list of unfortunate sports fanbases ranked from “OK, things are bad” to “This is just embarrassing.”
Washington Redskins

Another season, another year of doubt that Robert Griffin III is the savior in Washington.
The Redskins are 3-8, so at least they’ve won a few games. However, the season started off with yet another injury to RGIII combined with an abysmal performance from his once-promising backup Kirk Cousins.
Even now that the quarterback has returned to the field, the team’s woes have continued. After a loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Griffin and head coach Jay Gruden publicly disagreed regarding some comments made by RGIII—comments that could be viewed as critical toward his teammates.
Plus there’s that whole mess with the team name.
Tampa Bay Rays

It’s hard to say that any baseball fanbase “has it the worst” at this very moment since they’re not even in season.
However, if one team’s fans are sort of peeved, it’s got to be Tampa Bay.
After entering the 2014 season with high expectations, the team finished in fourth place in the AL East and failed to make the playoffs. On top of that, their two-time AL Manager of the Year, Joe Maddon, bolted for Chicago.
Oh, and on top of all of that, their stadium continues to be the worst.
Indiana Pacers
3 of 13
The 2014-15 season hasn’t started off too badly for the Indiana Pacers, but still. Those fans have had a rough go.
First, the team lost Lance Stephenson in the offseason for a contract very similar to the one it offered.
Second (and worse), Paul George went down with a horrific injury in a Team USA scrimmage. It will be a miracle if the Pacers star plays at all this year.
Other injuries have plagued the team thus far, and for a team with such high hopes just a few months ago, it’s been disappointing.
SMU Football

Southern Methodist University football fans have it hard enough after the whole death penalty thing.
But now it’s getting worse. The Mustangs are in the midst of a winless season. On top of that, Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports has ranked them dead last in the FBS for the year after 10 weeks.
Here are some 2014 stats to help paint the grim picture (as of Nov. 16):
- Games: Nine
- Touchdowns: 10
- Points scored: 90
- Points allowed: 388
- Wins: Zero
Not the best.
Brazil Soccer

True, it’s been months since that horrific, embarrassing, utterly shocking beatdown by Germany in the World Cup semifinal.
But to get absolutely crushed when you’re both a favorite to win the whole thing and the host country? It was one of the worst losses in World Cup history. That’s not something you’re going to get over quickly.
Los Angeles Lakers
6 of 13
Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest players in NBA history, and he is going out in the worst way possible. His Los Angeles Lakers haven’t been a true contender since Phil Jackson was still there, and this year’s team is particularly putrid.
With just one victory in the first 10 games this season and sitting in last place, the Lakers are pretty hopeless.
Highlights of the 2014-15 Lakers thus far include Bryant setting a record for most missed field goals, fans snoozing and Jeremy Lin unable to form sentences to describe the carnage.
Chicago…Just in General

The Chicago Bears may have eked out a win against the Minnesota Vikings recently, but to be clear, fans in Chicago are not happy.
It’s bad enough that the Bears are saddled with Jay Cutler’s outrageous contract, but the team continues to fall short of expectations year after year.
Also in Chicago: Cubs fans might think they’re in for a turnaround, but one Joe Maddon and some prospects does not a champion make. The White Sox haven’t made the playoffs in six years, and Derrick Rose is a walking injury.
Thank Ditka for the Blackhawks.
New York Jets
8 of 13
Is it me, or does it seem like the New York Jets are looking for a new quarterback every year?
Geno Smith has been a bust, and Rex Ryan is rumored to be out next year. Both have been fined for yelling profanities, and it seems like it might be time for the Jets to get a swear jar.
The quarterback saga, the coaching saga, the fact that no one likes the general manager—there’s not much for Jets fans to be happy about at the moment.
Michigan Football

For the winningest college football program in history, it’s been a pretty rough year for the Wolverines.
Their record is 5-5 (3-3 in the conference). Rumors about the possible dismissal of Brady Hoke continue to fly, and they practically gave away tickets to a game earlier this year. Plus, they got beat handily once again by their “little brother” down the road in East Lansing. Oh, and Notre Dame shut them out in the last scheduled meeting between the two teams.
This might be Michigan football’s rock bottom.
Edmonton Oilers
10 of 13
Dear other fans of losing teams, the people in Edmonton might be worse off than you. Through 18 games, the Edmonton Oilers are 6-10-2 and in last place in the Pacific Division.
Their winless first five games of the year represented the team's worst start since 1992-93.
With second-year coach Dallas Eakins in the hot seat, things aren't looking up for the long-tortured Oilers fans. ESPN ranked Eakins as the worst head coach in the NHL—based on predictions from a panel of hockey experts, but still.
Jacksonville Jaguars
11 of 13
The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t made the playoffs since 2007 (also the last time they won over eight games in a season). They’ve never won a Super Bowl, and even though they’ve only been around since 1995, that still hurts.
Philadelphia 76ers
12 of 13
The Philadelphia 76ers have started the 2014 NBA season with a horrid 0-10 record. This is bad enough without the following two points.
They could’ve won a recent game against the Houston Rockets—they led by three with 35 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, head coach Brett Brown got a technical foul for kicking a basketball, and (obviously) Philly went on to lose, 88-87.
Also, this little streak comes just months after the team tied an NBA record with 26 consecutive defeats.
Oakland Raiders
13 of 13
The Oakland Raiders are riding a 0-16 losing streak dating back to last season. They have been eliminated from playoff contention, and it’s not even Thanksgiving yet.
The team fired its head coach, Dennis Allen, back in September, and now the only thing fans really have to cheer about is that they avoided a winless season.
Nope. I don't think I'd want to be a Raiders fan.
