Overview
After losing the first match, South Africa bounced back with a vengeance in the second ODI, bowling Australia out for 154 and winning by three wickets with 134 balls still remaining.
The result probably flattered the visitors somewhat, though. Despite a solid bowling effort, which saw Morne Morkel claim career-best ODI figures, their batting stuttered once again. Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis have all hit a slump at the same time. Rilee Rossouw and Farhaan Behardien are both struggling to adapt to international cricket, while David Miller is still hovering in limbo somewhere between being brilliant and not worth persisting with.
Still, the result is all that matters and a win in the third ODI will give some momentum heading into the last two games of the series.
As per ESPN Cricinfo, Australia have opted to rest Mitchell Johnson for the remainder of the series to ensure he is ready for the Tests against India. Xavier Doherty has been ushered in instead of Nathan Lyon. Michael Clarke is definitely out of the third match, but coach Darren Lehmann was coy about whether he’ll be back at any time during the games that follow. Pat Cummins will replace Johnson for the remainder of the series.
Johnson’s absence offers some reprieve for South Africa’s openers, who have struggled against the Aussie pace ace throughout the series. If they were short on confidence, it might be just the break they need to regain a bit of form.
From a conditions perspective, the Manuka Oval has hosted just three ODIs, most recently in 2013 when Australia and the West Indies played there, with the Aussies winning by 39 runs. With the territory being unfamiliar for both sides, the match will be all about who can adapt better and quicker.
Key players
Australia
Josh Hazlewood has been in superb form, with six wickets at an average of 13.50 in the two matches. He's the prefect mix of aggression and probing lengths which never allows the batsmen to rest. With Johnson out of the equation, Hazlewood will have to take charge.
South Africa
David Miller has showed signs of being the player South Africa hopes he can be on this tour. He’s immensely talented and needs just one breakthrough innings to get the monkey off his back. A half-century in the first ODI has set him up well and if he can follow it up with another steady knock, he might finally start living up to expectations.
