Austria vs. Brazil: How the Selecao Should Line Up in International Friendly

Christopher AtkinsNov 17, 2014

Dunga's Brazil is rapidly taking shape, and last week's 4-0 victory over Turkey was just another demonstration of what the team is beginning to achieve as a unit.

Following the World Cup, there was understandable despair surrounding the performance of the side, with the tournament ending in disastrous performances against both Germany and Netherlands.

Progress has been rapid, however. Brazil are five matches unbeaten, they have scored 12 goals and are yet to concede. From the disarray of July, they have come an incredibly long way.

Key to that progress has been consistency of selection, with only enforced absences seeing Dunga change what has been a settled unit over the course of the past five games.

At this stage, given the success against Turkey, that would have to be considered the most likely outcome when it comes to picking a side for Tuesday's clash with Austria. Given Dunga's track record, it would be a major surprise to see him stray from what has been a successful formula.

Neymar and Willian starred against Turkey

What worked so well against Turkey was the side's combinations in forward areas, with wide players Neymar and Willian simply sensational for much of the clash. With Oscar linking play from the No. 10 position and Luiz Adriano offering a mobile presence at the point of the attack, it is a combination worth seeing once more.

For the latter, fresh from his excellent goalscoring with Shakhtar in the Champions League this season, it will be a second opportunity to state his claim for continued inclusion. Against Turkey he was good, but to play up front for Brazil on a regular basis, he must show more.

The other player who will feel he has much to prove against Austria is central midfielder Fernandinho, currently second fiddle to Chelsea's Ramires should all players be fit and available.

The Manchester City player has not been in poor form of late, having lost his automatic place in the side at Eastlands since the summer arrival of namesake Fernando from Porto.

Partnered with Luiz Gustavo, the pair showed glimpses of potential at the World Cup before falling apart along with the team as a whole at the semifinal stage. Having put in a strong display against Turkey, he must now continue to build upon that showing.

Brazil are rapidly gaining momentum

Diego Alves will resume duties in goal, deputising for the absent Jefferson, while a back four of Danilo, David Luiz, Miranda and Filipe Luis is beginning to take on a familiar look. With no goals conceded, Dunga would be loath to break up what has been a successful combination.

Austria will be another strong test of Brazil's development but also are a side that the Selecao should and will expect to beat.

Another win notched up will end a successful six months for Dunga in his second spell at the helm and set Brazil up nicely for an assault on the Copa America in 2015.
