Manchester United Transfer News: Angel Di Maria Open to Future PSG Move

Tom SunderlandNov 17, 2014

It may pain Manchester United to learn that Old Trafford wasn't Angel Di Maria's first-choice destination during the summer, but the knowledge that he could depart for Paris Saint-Germain in the future is equally concerning.

In a recent interview with French programme Telefoot (h/t the Daily Mirror's Neil McLeman), the £59.7 million man made no mistake in leaving the door open to a Parc des Princes switch in the years ahead:

"Could I join PSG in the future?" he asked. "Yes maybe. I am still young. In football, there is a lot of movement and I don't know how things will end up."

It's far from the statement of loyalty that the Red Devils would assuredly wish to hear from their stars, especially one who smashed the British transfer record and bears such a huge responsibility in restoring them to former glory.

Di Maria noted that PSG's financial parameters were the only blockade in his hopes of a move to the French capital. With his place at Real Madrid seemingly under scrutiny, he opted to settle for Old Trafford instead:

"

Going to Paris would have been a good experience. I think it was a problem of money. They could not buy any players and I think that is the main reason I did not go to Paris. To play in a French club is something that would please a lot of players but today I play in the Premier League. But you never know.

[...]

At the time, there were a lot of clubs interested. There were a lot of clubs who wanted to have me. They came and went but Manchester appeared and they never went away and because they really wanted me, I went there. That is how it happened.

"

It's heartening to hear of the Red Devils' desire to land their man, but to hear doubt concerning a player's commitment to the cause is quite the opposite.

Di Maria's arrival has gone down smoothly at Old Trafford. He has crafted 28 chances for his side in just nine appearances, per Squawka. That sum is more than double the amount any other squad member has managed.

To some extent, outlooks such as the one shown by Louis van Gaal's record signing are only to be expected in the modern market. Signing the best foreign talents gives a greater probability of short-term results, but many players may not feel the same intimacy with the club they represent compared to local or homegrown individuals.

United will want Di Maria focused on his current job. For all the killer passes he may pick out, consistency is becoming an issue, Metro has revealed:

It's in the hands of star arrivals such as him, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and others to ensure the Red Devils can bounce back to European football this season. At present, the club sit seventh in the English top flight and undoubtedly out of any title race with leaders Chelsea 13 points ahead.

Meanwhile, PSG remain locked in the Ligue 1 title race and have shown with a beating of Barcelona in the Champions League that their ascendancy continues to show promise.

From a player's perspective, the prospect of a Parisian switch may understandably represent a more appealing future, but United will demand that their key stars graft during times of need.

Such is the predicament Van Gaal faces. The manager needs elite talents in order to compete with the Premier League's finest, but guaranteeing faith in the cause and high resolve isn't as easily recruited.

As long as Di Maria produces on the pitch, United will continue to thank him for his services. However, with a timer seemingly placed on his time at the club, there's some question as to how long they can hope to have such talent.
