Barcelona Transfer News: Latest on Gerard Pique, Martin Montoya, More
Barcelona's transfer ban has thrown an interesting wrinkle into the 2014-15 season, as the news and rumours coming out of the Catalonia capital have been fast and furious leading up to the January window.
The Blaugrana can't bring in any new players—barring a successful appeal—which puts pressure on club officials not to make any sales they might regret instantly, as there is no way of replacing those players.
Speculation regarding the club's long-term plans is also running rampant, but one former (and perhaps future) team president shed a light on the things that may or may not happen in the near future. Here's the latest transfer news coming out of Barcelona.

Gerard Pique Rules Out January Departure

No player has been linked with a move away from the Catalans more than Gerard Pique in the past few weeks, but in an interview with Movistar TV (h/t Goal, for Fox Sports), the defender made it clear he has no intention of leaving his boyhood club:
"Barcelona is my life and I do not plan to leave. I will continue to fight for a place. I don't think playing two or three matches and then leaving would be consistent.
[on coach Luis Enrique] It's a player-coach relationship, as there may be thousands in the world of football.
In the end, it is he who decides and players try to do what he wants from us.
"
The Spanish international hasn't featured for the Catalans since the Clasico loss to Real Madrid, per WhoScored.com, fuelling rumours regarding an imminent transfer. But such a move always seemed unlikely, as Pique was born and raised in Barcelona before he moved to Manchester United.
The 27-year-old became a superstar after his return to Spain, blossoming into one of the most revered defenders in the world. His performance has dropped since the retirement of Carles Puyol, however, and this extended spell on the bench was seen as a bad omen for his Barcelona future.
But the Blaugrana don't have a ton of veteran options besides Pique and would be unable to chase one in 2015 due to the transfer ban. With the club thirsty for silverware this season, the sale of a key contributor seems all but impossible.
Pique is still the regular starter for the Spanish national team for a reason—he's one of the country's top centre-backs. He may be struggling with form right now, but his experience and potential when he's at his very best make him a safe bet to stay with the club in January.
Martin Montoya Nearing Exit Door

One man who could be on his way out is right-back Martin Montoya, with the Blaugrana reportedly signing off on a permanent transfer in January, per Sport's Javier Miguel.
The 23-year-old has hardly seen the pitch in 2014-15—once, via WhoScored.com—and was "humiliated" when Enrique opted to field Adriano against Almeria, according to his representatives. Enrique didn't help matters during a recent press conference, when he spoke about Montoya's situation.
He said he "respects [Montoya] a lot, but he must wait for his opportunity...if it arrives. He already knows he has to win it in training."
Telling a player his opportunity may not arrive at all speaks volumes, and with Dani Alves still holding down the position (and Douglas available off the bench), a transfer for Montoya is starting to look inevitable.
Liverpool, Inter Milan, Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen are all interested, per Miguel, and although a loan deal has not yet been ruled out, a permanent move appears more likely.
As shared by Barcastuff, Sport published one important detail: The Catalans insist on a buy-back clause:
"Barcelona are willing to let right back Martin Montoya (23) go in January. Buy back option to be included, loan also possible. [sport]
— barcastuff (@barcastuff) November 16, 2014"
Seen as a natural heir to Alves, it's difficult to understand why Enrique hasn't tried harder to keep the 23-year-old happy. Montoya has always flashed a ton of talent in limited minutes, and with his Brazilian teammate drawing ever nearer to retirement, his knowledge of the system would make the transition from Alves to Montoya seamless.
Joan Laporta Wouldn't Chase Jose Mourinho

Former club president Joan Laporta is up for re-election in 2016, and contrary to suggestions from the Spanish media, he won't bring Jose Mourinho to the Camp Nou if his bid is successful, via Sky Sports (for Fox Sports).
As he told L'Esportiu, Mourinho's coaching style would clash with his personal philosophy:
"My style of coaching is with the [Johan] Cruyff philosophy.
Mourinho is a great professional and I respect him, but I did not mention him with Jorge Mendes, a person with whom I have a good friendship for many years.
From time to time, we talk about things.
"
The rumours originated when Laporta was spotted meeting with Jorge Mendes, a well-known agent who counts the current Chelsea manager among his clients.
Laporta has always been a proponent of attractive, attacking football, while Mourinho has gained a reputation for being a defensive-minded manager in recent years. Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff struggled with the idea of the new club president going after Mourinho, as shared by Marca in English:
Mourinho has found success all over Europe, but he has never taken charge of a direct rival of a team he previously coached. He's not particularly well-liked in Barcelona, either, as the Clasicos between Real and the Catalans were exceptionally vicious during his time in La Liga.
A marriage between Mourinho and the Blaugrana makes little sense—and if it's up to Laporta, it will never happen, either.
