Biggest Winners and Losers from the OHL Classic at Mayakoba

Ben AlberstadtNov 16, 2014

The OHL Classic at Mayakoba is over. And the guy you see in the picture above, Charley Hoffman, he's a winner (you may not recognize him with the shorter hair he's been sporting this year).

Prior to the advent of the wraparound season, this would have been the "end of the golf season." Instead, we're officially on break until the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at the beginning of January, when the 2015 portion of the 2014-2015 season begins.

Who joins Charley Hoffman as a winner this week? Click through to see.

Winner: The Last Man Standing

1 of 6

As he reached the 18th hole Sunday, Shawn Stefani likely needed a birdie to win. Instead, he hit his drive into a fairway bunker and made bogey.

Danny Lee, who made seven birdies on the front nine, couldn't buy a birdie on the back back nine. He finished two strokes back.

Jason Bohn, who led after three rounds, never could put it all together on Sunday. He carded a three-over 74.

Charley Hoffman carded four birdies on his front nine and held on down the stretch, making another two birdies on the way in. Even though he hit his tee shot behind a tree on the final hole, he was able to maintain his composure, chipping out left-handed en route to a closing bogey and a one-stroke victory.

Loser: Back-Nine Danny Lee

2 of 6

From the third through the ninth hole in the final round, Danny Lee made birdie on every hole. That's right—he carded seven birdies in a row en route to an outward 29.

He appeared to be well on his way to victory.

Then, on the back nine, Lee didn't make a single birdie. Instead, he bogeyed three holes, including the 18th, to finish two strokes off the lead. His once-hot putter grew cold, as he'd exhausted all his magic with the wand on El Camaleon's outward nine.

All Lee had to do on the back nine was shoot even par and he'd have won the tournament by a stroke. Instead, he shot three over and finished tied for third.

Winners: Those in Need of a Rest

Fans of the PGA Tour finally get a break, as there isn't an official event until the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at the beginning of January.

Of course, an unofficial event, Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge, is on the calendar for the beginning of December. And there are several international events of significance, including the DP World Championship, the finale of the European Tour's season.

Still, the majority of the PGA Tour's best will take some time off heading into the holidays. So too will the majority of PGA Tour fans, as a relentless campaign, which has been going nearly non-stop since the beginning of January, has finally wrapped up with the conclusion of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.

Loser: Jason Bohn

Journeyman Jason Bohn carded three really, really solid rounds of golf in Mexico.

Journeyman Jason Bohn entered the final round of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba leading by one stroke.

Journeyman Jason Bohn, however, did not win the tournament.

Instead, Bohn fired a three-over 74 when those around him near the top of the leaderboard were shooting 66s and 67s. He fell to a tie for seventh, finishing at 12 under for the tournament, six strokes behind winner Charley Hoffman.

For the Alabama native and two-time PGA Tour winner, it was a disappointing finish.

Winner: Golf in Mexico

5 of 6

The OHL Classic at Mayakoba has turned into a pretty nice event since its inception in 2007. The only PGA Tour event contested in Latin America, the tournament now has its own week on the calendar and isn't contested opposite a more prestigious event. The strength of field has increased accordingly.

And although the weather at El Camaleon Golf Club didn't cooperate Saturday, the sun and surf in Playa del Carmen usually make for four days of scenic and mildly compelling action—a perfect way to head into the holiday layoff prior to the first events of the 2015 portion of the 2014-2015 PGA Tour season.

Mexico, too, can be very proud of native son Carlos Ortiz. After setting the Web.com Tour on fire last year with three victories, Ortiz notched the first top-10 finish of his PGA Tour career with a tie for ninth at the OHL Classic.

Loser: Someone's Mortgage Payment, BMW

6 of 6

Twenty-four-year-old John Huh used his 8-iron to notch a hole-in-one at the 159-yard par-3 15th hole during his first round.

For the 2012 winner of the tournament, it was the first hole-in-one of his young career. And as a result of the ace, Huh won a new BMW Series 2.

And of course, Quicken Loans pays the mortgage of a lucky sweepstakes winner for a year every time a tour player makes a hole-in-one.

Thus, someone's mortgage payment for the year has been vanquished and BMW is down a car (really, both are big winners thanks to well-conceived advertising ploys).
