4 Star Recruit Ware Commits to Bayou Bengals
July 29, 2009
4-Star athlete (Rivals, Scout) Spencer Ware from Princeton High School in Cincinnati, OH has committed to the LSU Tigers football program, according to various sources.
The 5'11" 227 pound athlete played primarily as a dual-threat quarterback for the Vikings his junior year, showcasing rare quickness for a player with his size and the ability to throw the ball with some accuracy as well (57% comp).
Holding scholarship offers from such notable schools as Ohio State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Iowa, and Purdue, Ware was being recruited as an athlete.
In today's recruiting jargon, that means he has the versatility and the athletic ability to play multiple positions at the next level.
Ware has showcased that athletic ability on the field, amassing almost 3,000 total yards through the air and on the ground last year for the Vikings and in combines, running a 4.6 40 and showcasing a 37" vertical jump at a Cincinnati Nike combine this past spring.
Ware's size and speed project well as a feature back for the Tigers in Gary Crowton's hybrid spread option offense.
Ware has Charles Scott-like measurables but with quicker feet. He's got the tools to be an impact player almost immediately, but with guys like Michael Ford, Richard Murphy, and Stevan Ridley waiting in the wings, a year to sit and learn the offense will probably be preferable.
This is not to knock Ware's dynamic ability but rather to accentuate the depth the Tigers have at this position.
Ware's commitment is number 21 for the Tigers' 2010 class, and with most thinking that Les Miles will be handing out 25 scholarships this year, it appears on the surface that the cupboard of scholarships is almost bare. That being said, let's not forget that we're still over 6 months away from signing day.
If history holds true to form, LSU will have 2-3 players decommit between now and then and 2-3 more verbal commitments will not have the academic requirements in place to be part of the 2010 class. It is, then reasonable to assume that 7-8 new scholarships may ultimately change hands before the 2010 class take its final shape.
I'm quite sure Les Miles would be elated if Spencer Ware was one of those final 25.
