Manchester United Fans Won't Forget David Moyes, but Now Is the Time to Forgive
Football fans never forget. Ever. And Manchester United fans will never forget the 10 disastrous months when David Moyes was their manager.
They'll never forget where they were when they heard Sir Alex Ferguson was retiring. They'll never forget Fergie, standing on the Old Trafford pitch, urging them to "support the new manager."
They won't forget the humiliation in a hurry either, when teams with abysmal records at Old Trafford turned up and won. West Brom, Swansea, Everton and Newcastle.

Most are thankful it's finally over. There's much more hope for the future now Louis van Gaal has been installed, even if the results haven't improved that much.
Moyes too has reason to look forward. He'll take charge of Real Sociedad with the explicit aim of rebuilding his reputation after a nightmare spell at United.
After a particularly nasty breakup, everyone is starting to move on. And that hopefully goes for the fans as well. It's OK to be happy for Moyes. He's found another job in one of the best leagues in Europe, and he's been given a chance to rebuild his career.

It's OK too to be impressed that he's taken such a big risk. It would have been easier to take the Celtic job in the summer or wait for the opening in the Premier League that will inevitably come sooner rather than later.
But instead, he's gone to Spain and La Liga. He's taken over a club threatened by relegation but which only last season was in the Champions League. There will be hope in San Sebastian that Moyes can return them to European competition quickly.
There'll be some United fans desperate for Moyes to fail again, if only to further prove their point that he was never good enough to replace Ferguson.

But it's not a sign of weakness to be happy for a man who they watched go through his lowest moments last season.
He could win the Champions League with Real Sociedad, and he still wouldn't be considered for another stint at Old Trafford. There's no danger of that. So even if he's successful in Spain, there's nothing for United fans to worry about. He's not coming back. They can wish him the best without fear of reprisal.

It might still bother some supporters that Moyes inherited the champions and turned them into a mid-table side. But he's no more to blame for United's problems this season than Ferguson or Van Gaal. They've each made mistakes. Granted, some more than others.
United fans will never forget the short time Moyes was their manager, nevermind how much they wish they could. But with a new manager, new players and new hope, it's time to move on. It might not be easy to forget Moyes, but perhaps, one day, they can learn to forgive.
