UFC 180 Results: Winners and Scorecards from Werdum vs. Hunt Fight Card
Much like with several other events this year, Dana White was left scrambling for UFC 180.
Injuries to Cain Velasquez, Norman Parke, Diego Sanchez, Joe Lauzon and Erik Perez led to a slew of rescheduling. While the fight card wasn't as deep as a result, the company found a way to deliver several compelling bouts.
Veterans Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt collided in a massive battle for the interim heavyweight title, while Jake Ellenberger vs. Kelvin Gastelum and Ricardo Lamas vs. Dennis Bermudez both had major implications at the top of their respective divisions.
Let's take a look at how all the results unfolded in Mexico City.
Hector Urbina Defeats Edgar Garcia by Submission
1 of 5
Hector Urbina spoiled the return of Edgar Garcia, knocking off the 30-year-old via submission (guillotine choke) at 3:38 in the first round in an impressive UFC debut.
The fight had a bit of ebb and flow early, but Urbina was able to gain the advantageous position. Urbina was patient looking for transition opportunities, and he locked in the choke hold to gain the victory.
Garcia, who was participating in his first UFC fight since being booted from the company nearly five years ago, had hopes of getting redemption in front of his home country. But Urbina had other plans, as he got his UFC career off to a fine start.
In a wide-open welterweight division, it will be compelling to see whom “El Toro” faces next.
Augusto Montano Defeats Chris Heatherly by TKO
2 of 5
In a matchup between a pair of fighters each looking for their first UFC win, Augusto Montano appeased the home crowd with a TKO victory at 4:57 in the first round over American Chris Heatherly.
Montano simply overwhelmed the American with a barrage of punches late in the first round. After Montan hurt Heatherly on several occasions, the fight was called just seconds before the bell to end the first round.
Heatherly complained, but he was not defending himself properly.
After four first-round stoppage victories in a row with smaller promotions, Montano got the boost to UFC and didn't disappoint. He has shown an exciting skill set, and it will be interesting to see if he can use this PPV win as momentum to start climbing the ladder in the welterweight division.
As for Heatherly, his UFC status is in danger after losing his first two career fights. He also fell to Ben Saunders in August.
Ricard Lamas Defeats Dennis Bermudez by Submission
3 of 5
Ricardo "The Bully" Lamas was able to put an end to Dennis Bermudez's winning streak, defeating the red-hot 27-year-old via submission (guillotine choke) at 3:18 of the first round
"WOW! Lamas submits Bermudez in the 1st. Gotta admit; I did not see that coming. Neither did Dennis, apparently... #UFC180
— Karyn Bryant (@KarynBryant) November 16, 2014"
The Bully looked extremely sharp in this bout. Lamas' boxing and leg kicks were on point. He landed a hard jab that rocked Bermudez and put him down. Lamas immediately pounced on Bermudez and locked in the choke to get the finish.
After falling to Jose Aldo for the featherweight championship back in February, Lamas has quickly picked up the pieces. His unanimous-decision win over Hacran Dias was hardly a dominant effort, but this victory over “The Menace,” a rising contender in the division, showcased improvement.
It's unlikely he has earned a rematch against Aldo quite yet, but with Cub Swanson expected to take on Frankie Edgar later this month, Lamas could get a shot at the scintillating Conor McGregor.
As for Bermudez, he's not out of the picture yet. He had won seven in a row before Saturday, and although this is a setback, he's still a young star who will remain inside the top 10.
Kelvin Gastelum Defeats Jake Ellenberger by Submission
4 of 5
Kelvin Gastelum continued his meteoric rise in the welterweight division and stayed undefeated, defeating Jake Ellenberger via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:24 of the first round.
"Welcome to the welterweight Top 10, Mister Gastelum.
— Kevin Iole (@KevinI) November 16, 2014"
After eating a couple of hard shots from the heavy-handed Ellenberger early in the first round, Gastelum found his rhythm. He allowed Ellenberger to take him down, but Gastelum scrambled to take Ellenberger's back. Within seconds, he had cinched in the rear-naked choke.
Ellenberger wasted almost no time tapping out.
Gastelum, 10-0 overall, has won all four of his UFC fights, with this one serving as the most important. With a victory over a top-10 opponent in Ellenberger, the 23-year-old is now a legitimate title contender.
Ellenberger, on the other hand, continues to move in the opposite direction. This is his third loss in a row, as “The Juggernaut” has quickly been stopped in his tracks.
Fabricio Werdum Defeats Mark Hunt by TKO
5 of 5
For now, Fabricio Werdum is the heavyweight champ. The 37-year-old Brazilian earned the interim title with a stunning second-round TKO victory over Mark Hunt in Saturday's main event.
Most expected Werdum to win, but not many thought he's be victorious via KO or TKO. The first round was shaky for Werdum. Hunt dropped him with a hard right hand in the first round. It looked as if the Super Samoan hurt Werdum with a few other shots.
In the second round, it's possible Hunt got a little over confident. He left himself open and Werdum took advantage with a huge flying knee. Hunt wobbled to the mat and Werdum pounced until referee Herb Dean called an end to the fight.
It has been a wild ride for Werdum. He joined UFC in 2007, had a two-year stint with Strikeforce and rejoined UFC in 2012. He has been a force since then, winning five fights in a row and now capturing gold for the first time.
