Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Gerard Pique, Anderson, More

Gianni VerschuerenNov 11, 2014

The rumour mill has been very active linking Manchester United with transfer moves for several targets the past few days, as a number of out-of-favour players could be making the switch to the English Premier League.

A star defender might rejoin the club, a former flop could be returning to his native Brazil and the race for a French midfielder will be fierce once the January window opens. Here's the latest transfer news surrounding the Red Devils.

Gerard Pique to Decide Future After International Break

Gerard Pique's situation at Barcelona continues to deteriorate as coach Luis Enrique has opted against starting the Spain international since the 3-1 loss against real Madrid, via WhoScored.com.

The Daily Mirror's Ed Malyon knows Enrique is open to the idea of the centre-back leaving the club, and crunch talks will be held after the international break:

"

Gerard Pique is set to put the Premier League's elite on alert by holding showdown talks with Barcelona.

The Spain defender’s relationship with boss Luis Enrique has become increasingly strained in recent weeks.

And MirrorSport understands that while Nou Camp chiefs are desperate to try and patch things up so that they don’t lose the World Cup winner, Luis Enrique is happy to see the former Manchester United man leave.

"

Spanish sources are telling the same story, and El Mundo Deportivo knows the 27-year-old could decide his future would be best served elsewhere, via Barcastuff:

Rumours of Pique's potential exit have been swirling for weeks now, and while it initially appeared to be no more than transfer gossip, Enrique's persistence in keeping him on the bench makes a January departure a realistic proposition.

Pique should be at the peak of his football career at the age of 27, but his performances have dipped since the retirement of Carles Puyol. Often the scapegoat when the Blaugrana struggle, a move to the Premier League could revitalise his career.

Barcelona's transfer ban means the Catalans can't bring in a replacement, and that remains the biggest obstacle to a January transfer.

Anderson to Return to Brazil in Free Transfer

More from the Daily Mirror, where Jack Lang and David Anderson know transfer flop Anderson is set to return to his native Brazil on a free transfer in January, despite his contract running through the remainder of the 2014-15 season.

Currently on loan at Fiorentina, Anderson told Radio Bandeirantes he's open to the idea of returning to former club Gremio, while Porto Alegre also remains an option:

"

There's always the possibility of returning to Gremio.

It's my home and I still support them – everyone knows that. It would allow me to be near my family.

I've spoken to them [Porto alegre] before but it never reached the point of a [concrete] offer.

I was close to moving before I went to Fiorentina. I was prepared to take a pay cut but the club didn't get back to me on that occasion.

"

The 26-year-old arrived at Old Trafford to much fanfare but never lived up to the lofty expectations, becoming one of the club's biggest transfer flops of the past decade.

Louis van Gaal doesn't see a future for the Brazilian and will reportedly sanction a free transfer in January, even though Anderson's contract doesn't expire until June.

Yohan Cabaye to Return to The Premier League?

Former Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye has failed to nail down a regular starting position with Paris Saint-Germain and could be available for a transfer in January, according to the Daily Express' James Dickenson.

PSG were hit by Financial Fair Play sanctions during the summer and could move the 28-year-old to help balance the books, with Arsenal, Liverpool and United all linked with a move for the France international.

The mobile attacking midfielder/forward faces tons of competition in the centre of the pitch with Les Parisiens, and in limited showings this season, he has failed to impress, looking far too eager to show his abilities.

Bleacher Report UK's Andrew Gibney believes things will have to change if the former Magpie ace wants to keep his spot in France's national team:

"

Cabaye’s poor performances are not just putting pressure on his place at PSG, but with every game that passes without Deschamps seeing theCabaye that impressed so much at Newcastle and Lille, it is surely only a matter of time before the former Marseille coach can no longer justify selecting the midfielder in his squad.

"

A transfer may be the only option, but Old Trafford hardly appears to be the perfect landing spot for the Frenchman. Cabaye is a good player, but he's not as effective or productive as Juan Mata, a similar player who is struggling for consistent playing time with the Red Devils.

PSG will hold out for a significant transfer fee, and United need game-changers. There's no way to justify spending a sizable amount of money on a player who doesn't represent a true upgrade over the current options, and with Arsenal and Liverpool in the mix, it makes more sense to let those teams battle it out for him.
