Ranking the Best Highlights for the Montreal Canadiens so Far in 2014-15
The Montreal Canadiens are back on track after a rough stretch at the end of October and the beginning of November. They have now won four in a row, with their most recent triumph being a 5-1 beatdown of the Boston Bruins on Nov. 13.
The Habs are once again tied for the most points in the NHL through 17 games. There have been a couple bumps, but it has been a great start to the 2014-15 season overall.
Montreal is a skilled team that can be very fun to watch when it's on its game. The Canadiens' stars always produce their fair share of highlights, and this season is no different. There have been some amazing goals and saves already this year.
Let's rank the best highlights from the Canadiens so far in the 2014-15 season.
Honorable Mention: Alex Galchenyuk
1 of 6If this was a highlight reel focused solely on ridiculous moves with the puck in the offensive zone, Alex Galchenyuk would dominate the list. He is playing with a world of confidence, and his wizardry has been on display on many occasions.
He cracks this list as the honorable mention with this goal against the Colorado Avalanche.
Galchenyuk steps out of the penalty box and sees the Avalanche trying to break out right in front of him. He uses a quick stick to make the steal and get the puck to Brandon Prust, who then turns and gives it back to Galchenyuk.
The 20-year-old finds himself on a partial breakaway and doesn't make a mistake. He takes the puck hard to the net, stickhandles a couple times and snaps a shot far side for the goal.
5. Carey Price on Mats Zuccarello
2 of 6Carey Price is Montreal's best player on most nights, so it's no surprise that he takes the next three spots on the list.
Flash back to Oct. 25 against the New York Rangers for this one.
The play develops after Manny Malhotra can't control the puck in his own corner. Martin St. Louis takes it and passes to Chris Mueller in the slot, who then makes a quick pass across to Mats Zuccarello. The young Norwegian one times it, but Price was ready.
The Canadiens' netminder slides across and makes an outstretched save with his glove.
4. Carey Price on Matt Duchene
3 of 6It's an impressive rush from the Avalanche here, but Price makes a better save.
Matt Duchene flips the puck to Jarome Iginla as he crosses the blue line, and Iginla then finds Alex Tanguay open on the left side. Tanguay shows great vision and slides a pass across the ice to Duchene, who is wide open at the side of net.
Price reads it all the way, however. He does the splits, slides across and gets his toe there just in time for a huge save.
3. Carey Price Acrobatic Save
4 of 6This is the only thing worth remembering from a game during which the Chicago Blackhawks smoked the Habs 5-0.
Tom Gilbert has a chance to clear the zone but doesn't, and it leads to trouble for the Canadiens. Jeremy Morin throws it in front to Brad Richards, who can't quite control it. He's able to circle into the corner, however, and make a backhand pass to Brandon Saad in the slot.
Saad backhands the puck on goal, and the rebound bounces right to Morin, who thinks he has an open-net goal. Price has other ideas.
He reaches back with his stick to make the save, and then he acrobatically jumps into the air to knock the puck away as it's about to bounce into the net.
Great athleticism by Price.
2. P.K. Subban in Alone
5 of 6P.K. Subban coming in alone against third-string goaltenders just isn't fair.
Subban jumps out of the penalty box and races down the ice to negate an icing. As he takes the puck around the net, Avalanche defender Tyson Barrie slips and falls, allowing Subban to circle to the front of the net with only Calvin Pickard to beat.
The Canadiens' d-man fakes the forehand shot, dekes hard to the right and slips it in past the sliding leg of Pickard.
Pretty goal from Subban.
1. Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec Short-Handed
6 of 6My oh my, this was a thing of beauty.
Tomas Plekanec, while short-handed, chips it past a pinching New York Rangers defenseman, and he's off to the races with Max Pacioretty.
Plekanec feeds Pacioretty in the neutral zone, and Pacioretty gives it back at the top of the circle. Plekanec then one-times the pass back to Pacioretty, who returns the puck one last time before Plekanec slams it home.
Tic-tac-toe, plus one. This is the goal of the year by the Habs so far.
