Cam Newton, Kelvin Benjamin, Greg Olsen's Post-Week 10 Fantasy Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldNov 10, 2014

Garbage time was a big help to any fantasy owners who deployed the Carolina Panthers' biggest offensive stars in Cam Newton, Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen.

To be fair, Olsen performed as the TE1 option he has been all year, but Newton and Benjamin inflated their numbers with two fourth-quarter touchdowns in Monday night's 45-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10.

The number of hits Newton took was alarming, as he was sacked a whopping nine times, unaided by the running game and a porous offensive line.

Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson weighed in:

Pro Football Focus' Steve Palazzolo highlighted how Newton's declining performance may be demoting him to a fantasy QB2:

Newton is just not the same in terms of his athletic ability (two carries for six yards), seemingly slowed down by the frequent punishment he's taking in the pocket.

After the game, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the reigning NFC South champions need to put forth a better collective effort:

That same sentiment was echoed by Olsen, per Panthers.com's Max Henson:

On the first pass of Newton's night, he tossed one of his three interceptions because Benjamin, a talented but inexperienced rookie, stopped running on a slant route.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller noted how lapses such as those by Benjamin are a cause for concern:

Benjamin is the biggest threat in the thin Carolina receiving corps, so he and Newton need to be on the same page as much as possible. However, that's easier said than done when the men in the trenches aren't doing a passable job.

Chemistry should continue improving between those two through increased repetitions, but Benjamin isn't anything more than a WR2 from a fantasy standpoint.

If the Panthers continue to play from behind like they did Monday, there is still hope for the trio of Newton, Benjamin and Olsen to produce decent fantasy numbers. Just don't expect anything consistent, because Carolina is anything but that as an offense.
