New NFL Rumors on Joey Bosa's Future Amid 49ers Buzz in Free Agency

Scott PolacekJun 24, 2026

Joey Bosa remains a free agent this offseason, but his NFL career reportedly may be over.

ESPN's Adam Schefter discussed the idea of the San Francisco 49ers signing Bosa and pairing him with his brother, Nick Bosa, and suggested "it is more likely than not" the older brother may actually retire.

"People have brought this up because Nick Bosa is out there, and it would always be fantastic to see Nick and Joey Bosa playing together," Schefter reported on the Adam Schefter Podcast (21:20 mark).

"... It is more likely than not that Joey Bosa has played his last NFL down. Now again, could a situation like the 49ers come along that entices him enough to come out and play again? Yeah, absolutely. We saw it happen last year with Philip Rivers. So you never know when a player is fully done and when he's not done.

"But the fact of the matter is, I think if the Niners wanted to pair those two together, it probably would have happened already. I think if Joey Bosa wanted to play football, it probably would have happened already.

"And I think he's perfectly content to sit on the sideline, with all the money he's made, and not have to go to training camp, not have to put himself into a situation that he doesn't want to be in, and be highly selective to choose an opportunity to play againโ€”and that's even if he does that, which I would guess there's a real chance he doesn't."

Joey Bosa will be 31 years old next season but has dealt with some injuries of late.

He was limited to five games in 2022 and nine games in 2023, although he bounced back last season for the Buffalo Bills and appeared in 15 games.

There was a time when the Ohio State product was one of the best pass-rushers in the league with a list of accomplishments that includes the 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year, five Pro Bowl selections and four seasons with double-digit sacks.

Bosa was still effective last season with five sacks, 16 quarterback hits, two passes defended and a league-best five forced fumbles. He may not be as dominant as he was at his peak, but that type of production would surely generate plenty of interest around the league if he still wanted to play.

However, he may want to hang up the cleats instead.
